Default 1991 CRX HF - new to site

Just picked up this 91 CRX HF. 148k, Si wheels. Should be a good around town run about.

Haven't done too many searches on the site just yet but I will need to find information on the following.

1. front rotor replacement - are they pressed on or loose and easily replaced.

2. removal of HVAC airbox - fan motor is shot and there is a mouse nest blocking most of the air movement. Looks like the AC Evap is going to need to be disconnected in order to pull it out.

3. seat cover replacement

4. replacement of ECM relay - motor spins a little too long before starting

5. may want to swap someone the 14 Si wheels for stock HF wheels, will have to check the classified. The tires are too tall right now and it is affecting its ability to pull away from a stop.

Thanks for any info.

they use phillips screws to hold them in place.

2. removal of HVAC airbox - fan motor is shot and there is a mouse nest blocking most of the air movement. Looks like the AC Evap is going to need to be disconnected in order to pull it out.
Removing the AC stuff entirely requires that you pull the dash.

3. seat cover replacement

Buy new seats. they arent hard to find.

4. replacement of ECM relay - motor spins a little too long before starting

no idea.

5. may want to swap someone the 14 Si wheels for stock HF wheels, will have to check the classified. The tires are too tall right now and it is affecting its ability to pull away from a stop.

Lol, its not the tires thats making it hard to pull away, its the ~50 HP the HF motor makes and the super long gears the HF trans has.

Thanks for any info.

Car looks good though.

I don't need to pull the entire HVAC, just move the black air box enough to drop the white one with the hamster wheel in it. Hopefully I can vacuum the rest of the system out from there.

3. seat cover replacement

Buy new seats. they arent hard to find.

I really like it, nice and small and toss-able, even the worn out seats are super comfortable. Will Del Sol seats or Intregra seats bolt in? Do you need to swap rails, etc.

I hear you on the gearing. But I think it is worse because of the incorrect taller tires. The car should have 165/70/13's on it. Right now it has 195/60/14's, which are something like 1.75" larger in diameter, contributing, albeit slightly to the over driven final drive.

Thanks for helping out a NooB.

I dont think that they are THAT much taller, given the 60 sidewall vs the 70 sidewall. Maybe 1/2".

Integra seats dont have the same bolt pattern so yes you'll have to swap the rails/seat pans. i would just buy some CRX seats in better shape.

You'll have to pull the dash to get to that stuff.

Crap, I really didn't want to get that deep into the dash. Maybe a leaf blower.

My seats are really only torn on the two bolsters. May have to visit an upholstery shop instead.

Tires, it probably isn't that big a deal. A tire size calculator has the circumference difference at 3.5", or 40 rotations of the tire per mile.

Upholestry shop won't be cheap.. May as well put some decent seats in there.. Del sol would work.. The local junkyard should have some gems.. lol..

Prelude, integra, S2000, Civic have all been done.. Choose what you like and go with it.

Cool.

The seats are not that bad, I thought maybe they could patch the bolsters. But swapping in something else would certainly be faster and cheaper.

The local CL has a few sets of Del Sol and Integra seats.

13"steelies vs 14"alloys, I'd stick with what you've got. as far as cleaning out the mess, pull the fan, hit up the rest of the box with a squirt bottle and a vacuum maybe. that way you don't have to pull the whole dash out.

The other week I pulled the fan box. Had the dash mostly loose, not all the way off. Freakin nasty. I vacuumed about 3 times the amount you see in the pics. Tons of air now. Smells like mouse pee. Have to deodorize the ducts now. Great little car, hardly any rot. Missed some Integra seats at the JY the other day. They were nice and cheap, but gone when I got back with tools.

I've done quite a bit of research on rims for my 91 HF. The best rims seem to be the 13" Civic VX rims, which are super light weight (9lbs), even lighter than the stock HF rims. They also look cooler in my opinion. The only problem is that they're hard to find and most sellers are asking way too much for them. The SI rims are 15-16lbs and if you have large heavy tires, they might be giving you problems. My HF still has stock rims with stock size tires but I have the shorter geared DX transmission which is great for driving around town but not so great for highway driving because I hit 3000rpm at around 68mph. I have to keep it under 55mph to get 50mpg. Perhaps with a DX or SI transmission, you'd have the perfect match for driving around town with your big tires.

I bought it from a friend, paid fair market value. Years ago he GAVE me the set of the superlight 13" HX/VX rims for a Festiva I was working on (no jokes). The bolt pattern was wrong so I sold them. SONOFA. If I only knew I would end up with this car I would have saved them.

I like the fact that they are actual choices in 14" tires now that I searched Tirerack.

There are plenty of other things to worry about for now. SEATS are now at the top of the list.

What are people running for replacement shocks/struts? I was just going to pick up some KYB GR-2's.

For a stock replacement, the GR-2's are good. Can't really go wrong with a quality replacement shock, though.

Nice to see you were able to get to the squirrel cage. The Dash is pretty easy to remove...as are quite a few of the parts on this car. What I've found over the years working on mine...I usually spend more time trying to work around the part than it would take to remove it, do what I need to do, and then put it back.

It gets a lot less scary after you do it a couple times.

It really helps that the entire car can be disassembled with a 10mm, 12mm and a phillips. You gotta love Japanese engineering.

As far as the shocks, I didn't see much else below the GR-2 that would be worth saving a few bucks on. I think there are Gabriels on there now, but they are rusted to heck and I doubt they are doing much to help the ride.

Great car. I am also new to the site and have a similar question. 91 SI with a ZC and 238K on the chassis. Had the transmission case inspected and pressed in new bearings from gearspeed, (they did an awesome job, very helpful guys) and they noticed it was not a SI transmission. Number on the case is A100. Anyone have any idea what it may have come from? Maybe a 91 Civic? Thanks. Sorry if this has been discussed in a previous forum

It is really a 30 footer. The closer you get, the worse it looks. It looks like it has hail damage from giant fruit/nuts falling from 30-40 feet in the air. The hood is aftermarket and has like 15 dings/dents. The roof has 3 or 4.

I think this car has a lot of life left in it and now I am prepared for the next Gas-pocalypse.

I am thinking most of the material is the firewall padding backing. The vents do smell like pee when the air is on. Time to go back in with some more cleaners.
