Default strange gearbox problem

I'll start by stating that my car is a eg civic with b18c1 conversion. the gearbox is a Y80 with 4.785 final drive and LSD.

My gearbox has recently started to play up on me.

It's been shifting in gears fine and not making any weird noises. One night i was having some fun with the car.. quick shifting at 8k and clutch kicking second gear. Then all of the sudden I was stuck in 3rd gear. So i drove it home in 3rd and when i got home the gearbox was fine again. I could select all gears fine with the engine off.

So i bled the clutch to rule that out and took her out for a spin again and this is what i've come up with. Everytime i make a LEFT turn, i can select the gears fine. When i make a RIGHT turn, the gears get stuck and I can only select 3rd gear and sometimes 1st and 5th. Cannot get 2nd, 4th or reverse.

Weird right..

I'm thinking it's either my Throw out bearing or Input shaft bearing has come loose. And when i turn left it moves back in and when i turn right it comes out.

Any ideas before I pull the box out and inspect it??

Sorry for long post.

Does it make a nasty sound when the clutch is disengaged?

ISB won't cause your problem.

I'm guessing it is a clutch problem. Probably popped a spring or broke the cage.

I hope so, then I won't have to take the box apart.

Not getting any weird noises when clutch is pressed or not.

Thanks.

Next time it gets stuck, stop the car, and turn it off. If it is just the clutch broken you should be able to shift once the car is turned off.

ok it's stuck again and this time i can't shift any gears and the car is off.

this leads me to believe it is something internally wrong with it. selector fork maybe? some sort of bearing?

i'm taking the box out tonight and sussing it out.

If i do have to open up the box, might as well change to ITR 2nd gear.. gsr 2nd gear tooo long!.. even with the 4.785 final drive IMO.

sounds like it. probably that stupid shift change assembly machanism whatchamagadget. i've replaced mine after the arm broke off (trans was raced upon back in the day) and when i went in to replace it, i found all the guides were all bent out of alignment or worn down to cause problems.

agreed on the 2nd gear being too long. like gran turismo back in the day. 1st gear...

...second gear. all that wait and the engine still hasn't dropped to the mainshafts speed.

don't panic.

put it on a table or work bench and have a lot of clean space around you to lay things neatly out in the order that you take them apart. (so you can precisely assemble them in reverse order.)

when the cases don't seal, which i can guarantee they won't, don't force them shut and don't panic.

that f'ing washer on the end of the mainshaft.. put some grease on it's tabs to help adhere it to the mainshaft, otherwise when you bump it it'll be out of alignment and not allow the case to go back together.

open the snap ring to allow that last 1/8th inch of gap between the cases to shut.

bench shift before putting it back in the car or you'll hate your life.

My gears are randomly places when I try to shift. Like 1st is where 4th goes and 1st is where 2nd goes. 5th and r are fine. How do I fix this? Same way?

Ok so box opened and split.

All gears and syncros are fine. One of the bolts that hold the shift change assembly snapped from being overtightened judging from slight round of the bolt. So the top half snapped off when quick shifting and got stuck right behind the shift rod.

Just need to drill the broken bolt out and replace and I'm good to go again.

All bearings are sweet as well so bonus. I'm guessing this box was rebuilt not long ago.
