Default mercron/dextron tranny oil in si trans. was that wrong?

Was I supposed to use motor oil?10w30? I hope this is not the case, I have a stage III clutch and it was on it the other day going into 2nd and something came loose I cant downshift at speed into 1st or 2nd without grinding like hell, it feels like its in the linkage, but I checked and it looks like things are ok, except i noticed the ball on the shifter fell i dont see anything that can suppot it except the boot. The worst part is I had a guy look it up on the store comp and thats what it called for. thanks.
