Will soon buy first CRX - Need help deciding between turbo b16a and turbo b18
Hey guys i'm new here and just wanted to start this thread because i've had the dream of building my own crx from the ground up for years.
Now its getting to that time where i'll purchase the car very soon. I'm hoping to get a Vtec crx but as I live in Australia they're very hard to come by and I might have to get the crx with the D engine.
I have one simple question to ask that I'm sure is more based on opinion but as i know not much when it comes to engines i'd like some advice. I'm deciding between a b16a motor or a b18 I was wondering if I can get pros and cons on them and how hard they are to install in comparrison. This car will hopefully be turboed in the future.
Thanks!

There were no vtec crx sold in the states, so you are lucky. The D is not bad, but if you're going to build it you might as well go B18 or even B20 with vtec head. There is almost too much information as it has been done so many times. Post some pics when you start and good luck!
Without some insight into what you're intentions are with the CRX, it's hard to recommend anything...
Drag Car? Daily Driver? Weekend Warrior? Based on what you use it for, there are better engine platforms for each application.
I'll assume this is to be a daily driver. That being said, 300hp is about all you will ever need (and possibly want) out of a street car. Any B-Series can achieve this goal. B16, B18, vtec or nonvtec, blah blah. I'd say go with what's available. General rule of thumb, the vtec motors will make 300hp more effeciently. But if it's a choice between a non-vtec b18 for $1000 and a vtec b18 for $3500... I'd get the non-v and go on vacation.

The B makes more torque and I like the drivebility of them but if the paper was coming out of my wallet.. I'd keep the D, drive it for the mpg and start hoarding away parts. The B has the potential to make alot more power than the D but in all honesty anything after 300 is useless without slicks in FWD form.
Never did I claim that the D-series is incapable of 300hp.
300hp is possible, but at what cost? Reliability? Longevity?
Based on the OP's.. I'd like to think he's not that tight on money. D-series engines are great for folks on a tight budget. Less modification, cheap parts, etc. However... the effiency of a B-series in the sub-300's outweighs the cost-effectiveness of a D, especially if reliability is a concern.
The B-series simply out-performs the D... period. Better flowing cylinder head, more displacment = "Easier" power. That, to me, is worth the few extra dollars.

Thanks for the help, yes I want to turbo it, i'll have a look now. It would be more of a weekend warrior than anything, but i've been searching around and when i look at b16 vs b18 there are alot of things said that don't always make sense so I was just curious on everyones personal opinion.
But vtec is a must hence why I chose the b series.

OP - I'm closing this thread because it is primarily a non-technical opinion poll. Please read carefully through the FAQs, as well as the Hybrid and Forced Induction forums. When you develop specific technical questions, then create a new thread to ask them.

If you're going to turbo go B18 but there are TONS of threads on b16 vs b18. Use the search function
