Default TURBO HONDAS IN EXTREME HEAT - - -

Whats up guys.

Well I am new to having a turbo and was wondering is their anything to look out for when the temps ouside are 100+ ???

May be a newb question...but I want to take care of this car.

Anyways...right now where I live in GA it is 102 degrees right now and is supposed to get up to 105 degrees. And I've got about 20-30 miles of driving to do today.

Everything on the car works fine. Cooling system is operating like it should.

I have hood spacers to somewhat vent up under the hood. But just wanted to get some opinions on if some of you even drive your turbo cars in this kind of heat.

THANKS!

it gets really sluggish when its hot outside... it also depends on if you got it tuned when it was cold, or when it was hot outside... i dont run my car hard when it is really hot out... seems to have a loss of HP... I had also had my car tuned when it was overcast here in the SF bay area...

Mine just feels slower when it's hot outside so I don't push it at at all. Everything gets hotter, and even with everything heat wrapped and a turbo blanket, IAT's go up. Intercoolers and cooling systems are only so efficient. My advice would be to just take it easy and don't go boost crazy.

A good rad and fan setup is more than enough to keep your car well within range.

Ebay slim fans and single core 10+ year old rads are where the problems come from

104 RIGHT NOW!!! Just got in from driving it hard. This was after it sat in a parking lot baking in the sun. Go Autoworks rad and slimfan with shroud keeping it cool with no effort.

I will say when it gets into the 90s it starts and idles rough and rich. Have to rev it at 2500 for about 10 seconds to keep it from dumping fuel. Need a tune for this weather.

Thanks for the replies!

Well...we have peaked here in ATL - 104!! Supposed to stay at this temp until 6pm and slowly drop from there. Around 83 degrees at Midnight.

I got it tuned when it was about 96 degrees. Tuned on crome.

Its got an aluminum radiator on it. With the stock fan. I don't have any heat wrap. I plan on getting some soon though.

But I just got back from chilis...which was about 8 miles round trip. I didn't run it hard. Didn't go into boost at all. Temp stayed at its normal range. No more no less.

Luckily I don't have to pick my friend up so that trip has been canceled. And the last thing I will be doing is going bowling tonight. But I don't have to leave home until about 7-8pm - which at that point the temp will be around 98ish.

I guess since the car was tuned when it was 96 degrees it doesn't make it run any different. Wonder what the winter time will bring when it is in the 30s...

Yeah. Some places are hitting that. I'm a little higher up in elevation. 20 minutes from Knoxville. It's like August in Phoenix here!

Make sure you have proper cool down for that turbocharger over 5 minutes, especially in this heat.. keep it cool, keep it down..

Okay cool.

I have been doing about 3-4 minutes if I just got done driving it hard.

And if I havent been running it hard and staying out of boost and driving normal, I let it go for about 1-2 minutes.

Shodan...should I change the 1-2 minutes even if I havent been driving it hard?

With his heat wave, yes. The temps this oil is seeing even now is prone to thermal breakdown

Do you have access to E85 or E98 in your area?

that will not help anything in terms of the engine temperatures enough to change the habits of a good radiator and coolant/water mix.. Don't confuse changes in cylinder pressures, with overall temperatures.

Well...I just got done driving it about 12 miles and its 102 degrees out. Ran normal. Didn't go into boost at all. This time I let cool down for a solid 5 minutes.

I guess next on my list other than brakes, is some heat wrap and blanket. And maybe add a couple more spacers to allow more venting. Although its running fine...when I pop the hood after drives its HOTT!! I know its going to be hot...but a little wrap and venting wont hurt.

But its put away until next weekend. So she'll have plenty of time to rest!

Only 102? Thats a normal day in Phoenix. It's currently 108 here. Either way, more heat will always equal less power and more work for the cooling system.

Yeah..only 102!

With humidity at 1000000000%

At least out there in AZ its dry heat. So out there its 102 and feels like 102

Here its 102 and feels like 110

haha

Well, from my point of view, it does help a little as it burns cooler and produce much lower EGT's.

Besides, it has a higher resistance to knock, which is more prone to happening under very high IAT's.

that's just mho

Nice read guys
I'm going to add hood spacers to my setup because I live in Texas where it's hot pretty much all year around. I drove my car to work this morning after it rained last night, so the air is thick outside and it's about 80 degrees in the morning. My car was tuned in the rain which is a funny thing. I guess that could be the worst condition to tune a car. I'm still trying to find new ways to kill the heat and my car idles funny when it's hot outside sometimes. Might have to hit up my tuner to fix my idle conservation portion or it could be my ground cables need some attention...

Biggest radiator you can fit coupled with high cfm fans and as much airflow diverted to the radiator as possible is where its at. Being in TX with a dc2 that has a/c p/s and 400whp has been a challange. With a half core radiator best temps i can see in these hot days with the a/c running is 204-208 on the highway and a little lower at slower speeds. with a/c off 196-200. this is with 50/50 coolant water mix with an addative and 14" 2750cfm zirgo fan on the radiator and a 12" 1700cfm zirgo fan on the driver side for the a/c system. The second fan really helped out with temps. Next step is a bigger radiator id like my car to stay under 200. When I make hard pulls my temps go down which is weird but I guess more coolant flow at higher rpm
