93 Civic VX - Will A/c compressor from a 96 Civic work?
I have a 93 Vx and im putting the a/c back in, everything is done except the compressor, i know i need a 94-95 but will a 96 work from an ek, or are the a/c lines different? thanks for any help.
I believe OBD1/OBD2 cars used different plugs on the compressors. I would just stick with a 92-95 one. Reman units on eBay are cheap. You'll spend 20-30 more then the used route and have it guaranteed working.
He says he has a 93 vx, but says he needs a 94-95? Check on the front radiator mount to see what type of freon it takes, if you had r12 you will need to convert the system to R134a. Then get the right compressor from there.

It sounds like the OP retrofit an R134a system from a 95 Civic into his/her 93 Civic (which may have been originally R12).
OP: Please clarify. You won't be sure of a correct answer until you do.
My car is a 93 and i bought it w/o a/c. I used a R134 system using parts from 94 and 95 civic. this instludes everything, evaporator, a/c lines, condenser, and dryer. i know the 96 compressor will bolt up to the bracket since they both belong to d series motors, but the only thing im worried about is if A. The a/c lines will plug into the 96 compressor and if B. there will be any problems with the difference between my obd1 car and the obd2 compressor, did they change this electrical plug on the harness?
Yes it will. All the compressors are interchangeable on the 94-00 Civics (not sure about 99-00 Si). Also the 97-01 CRV's use this same compressor. On some Civics there are two different compressor models offered though, so be aware of which one your picking up. The Sanden unit is the most common. The compressor itself is called a TRS090, and the specific model number on 94-95 Civics was 3057. There were various other model numbers over the years (4993 3057 4955 4956), but these are all interchangable. Here is a picture:

As for oil, you will want to get some good stuff. Don't buy the crap they sell at autozone. Or use the cheap crap that comes inside a re-built compressor. Only buy premium PAG-46. The type that says "double end capped". Only if your buying a brand new SANDEN brand compressor, does it come with this good oil inside. Double end capped pag is much more stable and chemically tolerant than regular PAG-46. It doesn't absorb water either. The entire system only requires 4oz (120cc) of the stuff. Just add the entire 4oz to the compressor intake port (large hole) after draining ANY and ALL old oil out of each piece of your used system (no need to flush). Here is the brand I've been looking at. Only $7 for 8oz bottle from Grainger.com.
Here are a couple interesting tests that compares double end capped PAG to the typical single-end-capped PAG they sell at the parts stores:

Here is where I bought some Supercool PAG 46:

PS: Don't forget.....always install a new receiver/drier when you open the system to atmosphere. Summit sells them for $15.
