Hi,

Im trying to lower my 1991 civic hatch just enough to get rid of the gap between the wheel and fender. I was looking at Tein S.techs but 1.5'' does seem like much of a drop is it really that noticeable? then i found these spring on Ebay. do you think they would be any good? would they be ok with stock shocks for a couple months until i can afford some good aftermarket struts or coilovers?

I used the Skunk 2 lowering springs and dropped my car 2 inches. It was very noticeable. I think that if it's a daily driver 1.5 inches may be perfect but it really depends on the look that you're going for. Lowering is really personal preference...are you doing it for looks or to improve handling? I wouldn't waste time or money on ebay stuff. Decide what you want the outcome to be and wait until you can do it right. I have wasted a lot of time and money doing things twice. You'll never be happy with the short-term, cheap option and it's a waste of time and money.

I'm doing it mostly for the look but better handling would be nice too Did you use the Skunk 2 springs with the stock struts? if so how are they holding up?

 

How low you go depends on what size wheels you have, if factory and you want the tire almost flush id go 1.5fr and 1.75rear. Tein S-tech's are a good spring for the price, just make sure theyre the real ones and not knock offs. As for struts when I had my Teins I was on factory struts and it rode great.

 

Surprised nobody has said it already:
Lowering with OEM struts = bad idea.

The lowering changes the suspension dynamics, the OEM struts cannot control the increased spring rates. Doing so leads to a bouncy ride, prematurely worn shocks, and/or bottoming the shocks.

 

I used Skunk 2 lowering springs and Tokico HPs. It was fairly economical. Overall I'm happy with the quality and performance. I also went with a front and rear camber kit from SPC because I did not want camber wear. I also have 15x7 Buddy Club wheels and 205/50/R15 Toyo Proxes 4s. I definitely would not lower the car and use the current OEM struts. Just wait until you can do it right with quality parts.

 

If you want that "ricer bounce" and the inability to control your car properly, then by all means--lower on your (on probably worn out) OEM shocks.

Or, you could do it correctly and buy decent new aftermarket shocks and get a mild lowering spring and have the best of both worlds.

I know that EFs are often gotten on the cheap, but that really isn't a license to put $50 ebay springs on the car. Replace the worn parts to get a properly driving vehicle, and 90% of the time the car will still be on OEM shocks that are long gone.

 

Before you lower it at all make sure all your bushings are in good shape. Just save up and buy better quality struts and drop springs. I learned the hard way and wasted $60 on those stupid ebay springs. They suck, they bounce and often cause the shocks to bottom out over the small bumps let alone the big potholes.

what about Tein s.techs? Their website says they are fine with oem shocks.

I actually have 17'' rims with 195/55 tires heres a picture.
how long did you have the teins on factory struts? did the struts blow?

Why such big rims? Too big in my opinion. But its ur ride. Don't use oem struts, you will get a lot of bouncing. Go here: https://honda-tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2967499 read and read and then start saving.

 

You can use the stock struts with shorter springs.
Just make sure the spring is near the same rate as the stock spring.
If you get a different rate, then the shock valve won' dampen correctly and you get the ricer bounce/blown shock.
You will need to use "top hats" for the shock to get it's travel and working length back.

 

Even Tein S.Techs will bounce with oem struts? their website says "Developed to be used in conjunction with OEM or OEM replacement dampers

And I forgot, the rims are actually 16''
