Ok, now I understand that cable transmission gears and hydraulic transmission gears will not interchange. I assume that means all of the gears.

Can I assume that all cable gears will interchange within all cable transmissions? And that all hydraulic gears will interchange within all hydraulic transmissions?

If this is true, does anyone have a list of which transmissions are cable and which are hydraulic? I understand that you can change a cable trans to a hydraulic but I think that would only serve to confuse me further...

No. YS1 cable trans are basically a hydro trans in a cable case. They're not compatible with any other cable trans (but are compatible with hydro trans) Y1 and S1 are compatible with each other and A1 and J1 are compatible with each other.

No, well sort of. Remember that the LS trans has a single cone 2nd gear synchro where all other B-series trans has a double cone. The LS also uses a different 3rd/4th synchro sleeve (pretty sure the synchros and hub are different as well)

Also, remember that for any B-series trans 1st and 2nd gear are part of the mainshaft on the mainshaft side of things, meaning you can really only change the ratios of 3rd, 4th and 5th unless you also change the mainshaft.
