Got me an EP3 with a knock coming from the head and this is what i found

BTW left rear most cam cap bolt was finger tight and as u can see it got HOT!!!







Ive seen this twice in old school dpfi civics and both said to hell with it and swapped the whole motor out. Im wanting to see if anyone else has seen this in there K before and what you have done to fix it. My idea is to pick up a set of used cam caps, cam holders, cams, and rocker assembly and install it all with lots of assembly lube and and oil change while im at it to hopefully catch anything that might be floating around still. did it run low on oil?

 

The guy said it started making a noise then all of a sudden at idle it died. I dont know what causes it ive seen a few people wanting to buy just single cam caps when searching but they dont say why.... Havent come across another story like this for anyone with a k-series. Car still drove just wouldnt idle. Car is 100% stock and the guy is 40 plus years old he didnt beat on it at all I bet.

I've seen some cams go bad but nothing like that. The ones I've seen were like pits and holes...

 

Dang that thing got mighty toasty!! Start ordering the parts to get that puppy up and smooth running!

 

honda wont sell just the caps but I talked to a guy on wed. and he has a whole a3 head along with another motor and a gang of extra parts from is head swap. He went camping for the weekend so im at a standstill till prolly tomarrow.

 

Seems to be a common thing for the a3. Mine never got this toast but def could see wear and pitting. Also a few of my cam lobes were pitted. Wonder if the a3 head eventually starves for oil over time. Oil pump weakens over time? Who knows.
