iirc the gap is supposed to be to where you feel a little drag if you slide a piece of paper in it so i would say that is a hefty little gap you got there

code 8 is for the TDC sensor - if your D16A1 is 86-87, the sensor is in fact in the crank angle unit on the end of the exhaust camshaft, however, if your D16A1 is 88-89, the TDC sensor is inside the distributor, not in the unit on the exhaust cam - hard to tell from your picture, but i am guessing you have 88-89 A1, which means you may need to be looking at the distributor to solve the problem
