Default Lightening my flywheel...

Well im gonna get my flywheel lightened as soon as i get it out of the car. How much do you think i should lighten it? How much does it weigh stock? I was thinking about lightening it to about 15lbs or so. I want good driveability and i want it to be reliable so i dont want to take off too much. Thanks.

i dont know if you've done a search on this topic but 15 lbs is more than impractical. dont most of them way around 15 to begin with??? anyways if you want it to be reliable dont lighten it at all. its meant to be a balanced system and all you will accomplish is unbalancing it. also, its very unsafe to lighten an existing flywheel. thats when they shatter at high rpm and literally slice through your firewall. i hope you dont have a passenger with you or they will turn into two. most people buy aftermarket lightened flywheels since they are about as safe as you can get. even with these, it is arguable as to whether they are reliable or not. do a search and you'll find more on this topic.

I did a search and i couldnt find anything that was very helpful. As for them not being reliable when they are lightened thats wrong...i have a close friend that has his lightened an on ZC with a 50 shot and its been that way for 2 years and he hasnt had a problem with them. And he rags that thing out. When i was talking about unreliable i meant that i heard that there was a certain point that you can reach then it will be too brittle and break. When machine shops(good ones anyway) lighten a flywheel they balance it too. Its the same process and finishing rotors...if its done right anyway. Thanks for the reply though...any other thoughts people?

Well a stock flywheel weighs about 17 pounds so lightening it few pounds would be really pointless. It's like the same as you saying i want to gut my car and taking out the floor mats. The difference is pointless.

i'm sure your friend's flywheel is fine along with others that have done similar. i'm not saying it's 100% gonna break. i'm saying that it's a fact that there's a CHANCE of it happening and i just can't justify a reason for taking that chance. you also may want to search again....i found a page of results. here's an example: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=170541
hope this helps
