'01 TL question on transmission
I'm looking at buying a 2001 TL with only 91K miles on it. Paperwork shows that the transmission was replaced(edit: they did the oil jet fix based on what the acura site says) at Acura dealer at 76K miles. Other than that, everything is in great shape. The only issue is that I am worried about these transmissions. If I buy this car and the transmission goes at 125K, it's just a piece of junk. I've read forums where the tranny is over $4K.
I'm looking for opinions on what more knowledgeable people think about a 2001 TL...with an already replaced transmission. I've heard stories where some have had 3 or 4 transmissions already. Steer clear of it?

It's true that MANY of these cars have been through SEVERAL transmissions.
The problem is that even the rebuilds/fixes (or new Dealer OE installed) transmissions aren't upgraded units.
So basically they're reinstalling/repairing another transmission that eventually will fail just like the original unit did.
There's a reason why these cars are so cheap! They're ticking time-bombs!!!!
It's quite unfortunate that such a great car (really, the cars are a dream to drive) is plagued with such expensive problems.
If I were you, I would buy one and immediately plan a Type S/6 speed MT transmission swap!
Makes for a great car, but the swap alone is probably going to run you almost what the car itself will.
In my area, at any given time, there's dozens of TL's for sale. For months/years at a time. What does that tell you? Nobody wants to buy a timebomb!

Yep. That's too bad. The car was a dream to drive. Yep. I'll steer clear of it. Thanks for the advice. I will look at 05's but they are kind of out of my price range at this point.

Got a call back from owner. Willing to go to 4900 on this car. Even with having to buy a new tranny that's 8900...and this car doesn't seem to be worth 8900.
What year is it that I ought to be looking at when a change was made in the tranny? 2005? Late 2004?

I recently purchased an 01 3.2 TL with 146k. Price $4500 Transmission was rebuilt at 80k. Around 151k the car began violently downshifting. Mechanic said it needed trans. After he finished mechanic said it was previously rebuilt and they did a $1500 rebuild which is why I just shelled out $2700 to have him do it right. :-)
