Hard to tell from the description of the problem and not being there to hear it for sure, but it could be several things. I know this sounds basic, but did you check your brakes? They're easy as hell to fix and could be the culprit. A worn out/warped rotor can make all kinds of nasty sounds and can even sound intermittent depending on speed. Worth a shot to check.
Can you describe the sound a little more? It's just really hard to diagnose a sound, ya know? You say it sounds rubbery, it could very easily be any number of bushings/joints in your car. It is quickly coming up on it's second decade of service, ya know? Rubber wears out after a while and should be replaced. Maybe a couple pics of whatcha got going on underneath your car suspension/brakes wise might help also.
