Alright, I've owned this R about two months now and it's starting to start really rough. It makes a crunching noise before it turns over all the way. That's the best way I could describe it. I have a video for better reference. This happens almost every time I try and start whether it's right away in the morning or right after a drive. It's not random and has been happening every time I drive it now. I don't really know where to start looking. Hope someone can help narrow down the problem. Also in the video, I am intentionally turning the car off and restarting to show how it starts. It doesn't die or drive funny after it starts but it does idle surge every so often as well. Thanks in advance for any input.

Idle surge

 

Start with cheap stuff and replace the starter. Could be the bendix gear in the starter going out.

 

Maybe it could be the starter. At first, it was making that whining sound as if you tried starting the car when it was already on and running but that went away so I didn't think it could be starter again but I can probably check that out.

 

Would weak contacts or flat spots in the magnets in the starter cause this as well?

Pulled my starter this morning, found it it had a loose contact. Tightened it up and it starts up like a charm now. Thanks guys, just gonna have to clean my iacv and/or fitv for the idle surge and it should be good.
