If I pull my distributor to replace the O-ring, do i have to make sure my number one cylinder is in TDC before I reinstall it . I was told I didn't have to as long as I didn't change the position of the shaft when I take it off. Also is the O-ring on the distributor or inside the valve cover. I only ask were it's at so I know to get a valve cover gasket while I'm at it

No you don't need to be @ TDC. As long as you line up the distributor shaft properly with the cam shaft you're OK. There is only one way they will go together tight.
