Picked up a 91 SI for $500
Hey everyone, just joined and looking for some info to help me out.
I picked up a 91 civic si this last weekend off a kid that did a 98 d16y7 swap. He believed the headgasket was bad and parked the car. I dropped a battery in it and it fired right up, but it idled at about 2k. After messing with the throttle cable and cleaning the throttle body(very dirty), idle control valve(clogged), and a few other items it now idles at about 900-1200 RPMs. As soon as I kick on the AC it bogs down to about 300-500 RPMs and then dies. As long as the car is moving the car/AC is fine. At times the car is very hard to start, it will just turn and turn. I'm thinking clogged fuel filter. It's got some mismatched tires on it, some 185/70r14s and 185/60r14s, but it's got aftermarket rims.... BOOSH!!
I'm not sure if the d16y7 is a vtec or not, if it is, not sure if vtec was set-up? Is there a way to tell which head is in the car? Also, I'm not sure if there is a hole in the exhaust or it's supposed to sound like poo, but it is deafening.
Anyway, I'll post up some pictures of it later. I'm on the work computer and can't load pictures to it to post.

I believe Vtec heads have the plugs facing the front of the car and non face the firewall. As for your problem, have you checked the cat to see if its clogged? Basic maint. should be your first then go from there.
Here are the pictures...

Motor...

Not sure if this is the original ECU or the one for the 98 motor...

Drivers seat looks like poo...

But the rear seats look pretty good...

My gas guzzler with my gas "saver".....

I hope you arent assuming its the exhaust. If you are just looking to purchase one cheap FLEABAY has them cheap but quality and fitment might suffer. As for 24's comment I stand corrected, sorry not 100% familiar with D series motors. I do know that if its Vtec it will have this on the pass side of the head...

No big deal, just keeps it simple I guess. As far as exhaust goes, I'm pretty sure there is a hole in it or what not. Plus, if the cat is clogged then replacing it all will just help out. I think it's leaking at the flange where the manifold meets the cat anyway. I'll have to snap a few pictures of the exhaust next time I get under it, it will make you laugh when you see what is holding it all together.
Dont forget about the Main relay, they can go bad causing intermittent problems. Clogged fuel filter and pump sock could be a culprit. Troubleshooting sucks!
Main relay? main relay to what? I'll replace the fuel filter anyway, just need to locate it. Clogged pump sock would make sence seeing as there is no fuel cap on the filler.
Found it, just picked up a new filter and a fuel cap. Is the tank access under the rear seat? I want to check that pump sock.
Yeah thats your fuse box bro.
The "lol" comment made me laugh though im not gonna lie
What are you plans with it?
I miss my ef, cant beat the mpg thats for sure

What does the oil look like? Chocolate milky brown=headgasket the plus is that this a very easy engine to swap head gasket on. Remove cat as stated, compression test or leak down. check timing marks on Cam gear and crank pulley.
