I recently purchased a 96 Accord (Manual) Non-Vtec,that has the 1800rpm buzz sound when shifting up from 1st,2nd, 3rd,while in the 1800rpm range, I have read the TSB(94-041 May 13, 1996) for this, and it states that parts in the TSB will have very little effect on this noise. So wondering if anyone here has had a sucessfull fix for this, I have checked the Cat shields and they are fine. Would there be any problem if I have a muffler shop eliminate the mid-pipe, and just put in a straight section of pipe between the down pipe and cat?

Also would like to know if anyone has had the "buzz kit" installed and it eliminated the problem?

 

Is the engine stock?
Is the exhaust factory stock?
Can you pinpoint exactly where the buzzing comes from?

 

Everything is OE (Stock) , I can't pinpoint it exactly, because you only hear while driving when you are accelerating from the 1800-2000 rpm range, but it is described in the TSB
94-041

 

Check to see if the factory mass dampers are still attached to the car.
There is one small one at the first 90° bend in the exhaust hanger, and another I *think* attached to the muffler or muffler hanger.

If those are there, you may try installing a few hose clamps onto the exhaust to help remove the buzzing.

 

its resonating. mine is doing that and i have to buy another resonator. only way to rid yourself of the dreadful noise

 

If you are referring to the rubber hangers, yes I have checked those, they are all still attached and look fine.

 

Where is the resonator you are reffering to? I've not heard any mention of this as a suspect.

There are mass dampers that are attached to the exhaust system. They look like hunks of metal that are just floating in space for no reason.
The first one on the 90° can be misconstrued for many things. It looks like an oversized washer or bearing and the corresponding bracekt on that hanger has a 'ramp' to accept it as engine torque rotates the engine and moves the exhaust.

I was wondering if it was the resonator, but I would think there would be more of a drone than a buzz.

The resonator is part of the mid-pipe assembly. It is a glass pack type muffler. #14


If you have tools, check that the heat shield and other parts are not loose or rubbing.

I have not noticed anything like that under my vehicle, which part # in the diagram would be the mass dampers, and or part they are connected to?

I have checked every nut bolt on the heat sheild, cat, and muffler, all are good and tight.
I really appreciate your help trying to figure this out, other than this buzz at 1800 rpm, and a slight vibration when the A/C cycles on, the car is in great shape to be 16yrs. old.

 

If memory serves correct it is part #24 of the #21 grouping.

 

Update:
Just got through installing the "buzz Kit" from Honda 18010-SV4-305 , and my buzzing noise is now gone!!
Hopefully this will fix it for a while, if it comes back I think I will take it to a local muffler shop and have them eliminate the mid pipe and install a section of flex pipe.

 

I have owned my /03 civic for 5 years and from the beginning I always believed the 1800 rpm drone is coming from the air intake resonator. I suppose decoupling it from the air filter box would verify quickly enough. I wonder if anyone who has installed a cold air intake has eliminated that dreadful drone or just moved it to another rpm range?
