Default What happened to my transmission?

I bought my 02 rsx-s about 4 months ago. It has about 160k miles on it. The transmission has always made a very very light whining noise. Just a about a week or two ago, I start the car in the middle of the day and there it was a noise at idle in neutral, that can be described as kind of a meshy grind but when I applied the clutch the noise went away. So I continued to drive the car as usual. As the days went on, more symptoms started to occur for example, gears started to grind but it wasn't always the same gear, it was random. The noise started to become louder, again it was only when the clutch was not engaged. Then the gears started to kick out. It started with 4th gear then it started kicking out 4th, 5th, and 6th at different times. The gears were becoming more difficult to engage. Then the other day as I was attempting to leave the parking lot and I had it in first gear the car made a loud bang noise, it seemed to have come from the transmission, the idle went down and almost shut off.. this took place simultaneously. Yesterday I had to leave my car at my gf's house because no gear wanted to go in this was right after getting to her house from a 14 mile drive. So I let the car cool down for about 7 to 8 hours I then attempted to drive the car back home, which I was able to make it with little trouble, the drive is highway so I didn't have to change gears too much.

I have done my research by reading through some posts, but none seemed to mention some of the things that have happened to me. I had my suspicions about the throw out bearing but I don't know if that causes all of my symptoms. I want to try and narrow down what my problem is. I will be doing most labor work myself unless it involves getting into the transmissions internals.

Does anyone have any idea as to what my problem may be?

If you're not gonna open the trans, then get a replacement w/ lsd or send yours to get rebuilt.

It sounds like the throw-out bearings to me.

it is a throw-out bearing you need a new clutch kit you should replace everything while your in there just because it's a pain to drop the trans so you you don't wanna just replace the bearing then in 5k need a new clutch

On average, how often do you change your clutch (in miles or kilometers)?

There is not a specified mileage for when you need to replace your clutch. How you drive will determine how fast it wears, more than the mileage will.

When its worn out, replace it.

I know this. I just wanted to get an average based on everybody else's experience.

I had the stock clutch on my ep3 until about 165000 miles and then my throw-out bearing went out too. As long as you don't beat on it too much and change the trans fluid at least once a year or every 15000 miles it should last for a long time.

I had an accord on 200,000 and I never changed the clutch... but it was a winter ride and I didn't beat on it. Crazy
