please help with mystery cooling problem.
i have an F22B2 accord LX,
on 3/1/12 i had the water pump and timing belt replaced.
about a month or so after that, i was driving one day and the temperature climed all the way up to the red. stopped and checked, the radiator was empty as was the reservoir, so i filled up both.
that lasted a few weeks, and now the problem is back and comes back about a week after i put more coolant in the radiator.
the reservoir is full, and the radiator is maybe a cup or so low on coolant.
i took the car back to my mechanic about 2 weeks ago and he pressure tested everything and check the underside for leaks, and says everything was fine, he also checked the fan relays, everything.
after it comes up to operating temperature, and i stop for a red light, it over heats all the time.
cant think of anything.
please help!!

Yes this can cause issues.
Are you sure the fans are coming on? I see you say "he tested" them but I would want to be sure, start the car in the driveway with the hood up (ac off), watch the temp gauge, as it gets to ~half or just above the fans should kick on....do they?
If the ac is working, when you turn it on the fans should come on as well.
When the other work was done, was the t-stat replaced?

So your radiator gets low on coolant but your reservoir remains full? If so check and replace your radiator cap. As far as overheating at a stop this sounds like your cooling fan/s isnt coming on however check your thermostat for proper operation as well..
the reservior is always full always to the top, and i notice that none of it goes back to the radiator. i will replace the cap. the fans do come on, and i am going to attempt to replace the thermo.

yes, the fans do come on, and i will check again to make sure that they do. when i replaced the water pump the thermostat was not replaced, as far i know it could be original.

So yea replace the cap so ur rad will drink from the reservoir like its sposed to. If ur fans are working thats good. Replace your thermostat as that can be the issue and for preventative maintenance reasons and bleed or have the system bled of air PROPERLY. Thats my advice..

had tat problem turned out that i had a small whole in my radiator from my radiator support it diddnt seem like it was leaking but after a month of driving and 4 bottles of antifreeze i decided to check the radiator
no, that problem will be discover when the mechanic pressure tested the cooling system....as the pressure will force the coolant to leak out from the hole/crack/etc.
Called Honda for prices on the rad cap. And the guy said that there are 2 different ones available and that there were 2 different rads that were put in. How do I know which on I have. I've looked everywhere for the brand.
i would take the cap off and get one like it at a parts store. odds are you have not had an oem honda radiator for years as most people replace em when they die with much cheaper aftermarket ones.
Im not sure if this is the same thing that happened to my accord but it almost had the same problem with the temp gauge going all the way up. For my accord at least, the temperature of the engine would rise up to a certain temp and thats when my radiator would start up and replace the hot fluid with the cooled down fluid and by fluid i mean coolant if that makes any sense lol. As long as the car doesn't start smoking and such it should be all good
