Default (Australia!) A change in direction - Eg civic weekend/track build

QR Sprint: 61.6 (RSR)
Lakeside: 64.1 (RSR)

Hi guys, I figure it's about time that I make one of these. Some of you may know me, but for those who don't i'm Foy, part of FFamily (aus)

So well where do I start, those that know me will know of my old party days where i'd go out every weekend, most times barely remember how I got home. Fun.. but the novelty eventually wore off. After being heavily into modifying cars since I had first got my license I decided it was time that I got back into the scene after around 2 year and build something as a hobby. With the increasing pressure from police targeting modified cars I wasn't really interested in building a hardparker/street car. Circuit racing has always interested me so I decided to build something I could go race occasionally but still drive around here and there if I wanted to.

Coming from a fairly heavy honda background with most my mates the choice of a base was fairly easy, a Honda EG Civic. Initially I had plans to buy a completely stock car and transplant a b18cr, do suspension, etc. But after pricing up a few things, my "budget" at the time didnt really allow for some things... not that it took long before I got hooked . So the search began, after looking for a few weeks a good friend of mine Alex and I found a certain red civic up near Rockhampton, after talking to the owner (who happened to be oldschool in the honda scene and knew some of us) we negotiated a deal and flights were sorted.

The Base: (photo makes it look amazingly clean! Shes a little rough in parts )
92 Eg Civic, Stock b16/gearbox, intake, catback, tucked engine bay, carbon bonnet, no PS/AC.

The drive home:
I'll let the photos do most the talking but i'll give a rough rundown, 2 mates, 5am flight to Rockhampton from Brisbane, slight ecu drama in the middle of nowhere! 700 total kms of fun!

Got busy with the car over the long weekend, excuse the shitty iphone pics

7Point Safety 21 Cage installed, thanks aldo for helping!

Made a custom towstrap and bracket to hold it, solid as! since I cant use my oem tow mounts anymore.

Forgot to add, since im only runnning a half size radiator for now, I made up some ducting out of some sheet alloy I had sitting around, it's braced to the body as well (cant see in this shot)

Threw in my hardrace rear camber arms in preperation for my semis which will arrive in a weekish.

...wheel alignment done, splitter finished, quick shot before I track today.

....

So I went back out to the track today with some of the boys, wasnt expecting anything as I was on a new setup after changing the alignment and installing the cage and splitter.. Smashed my pb by .8 of a second to get a 61.6 at Queensland raceway, so stoked!

.....

Also had these turn up today so i'll be back out soon testing them, time to lay down some proper times

New tyres are 205 50 15 federal fz201, they are super wide for a 205 though!

tyre width..

Got the tyres fitted to the 8" 6ul's yesterday, now to wait 2 weeks to race again, pretty excited, just need to give the car a good once over before then too.

.

Sorry if the posts seem a bit confusing, did a mass c+p off my NWP thread! Hope you guys enjoy thanks! Foy.

It's not actually attached to the bumper at all, similar to the p1 brackets, it's mounted to the oem tow hook holes on the chassis

Bit of an update;

Went to the track last thursday with big hopes to finally scrub in my semis, bit of a failed day haha, went out for my first session and pulled in after 4-5 laps, as I get into pits the boys yell out there was coolant under the car. Luckily the motor wasnt cooked and it only turned out to be a pinhole in the OEM oil cooler lines, needless to say it ended my track day. I topped up coolant and took it for a spin around the pits and the leak had stopped (only opens up at high rpms) so it was fine to drive home atleast.

I had a few days off of work and lost all motivation for the car so I put the car away in the garage spent thursday and friday night hanging with a friend then helped run our monthly DownshiftAus.com Meet on saturday afternoon;

http://www.downshiftaus.com/20...-meet/

Got home on saturday night and got motivated and started to rip the bay apart, the gearbox was coming out for a lsd+fd swap anyways so I figured I may as well pull it all out in one go as i wanted to add an oilcooler and hasports to the motor and clean up a few things while I was at it.

Went out the following night with the other FFamily boys for what was meant to be a quietish night on the town, needless to say those plans didnt last long when I got back to Alexx's house after 3am after getting stuck out. Few hours sleep later and Alex and i were on our way over to mine to finish off getting the car stripped, few hours later we had the motor and box out and everything was labeled and ready to go.

Now i'm just up to cleaning, I had a CV spray in the bay so theres a bit of a mess there plus im going to paint a few brackets and tidy up the wiring a little. I'll be dropping my gearbox off next week so hopefully if all goes to plan I can start putting everything back in the car asap after and try get the car ready for the 6-8 of july which is the next trackdays I had planned to run. Who knows how what may come up though!

Ok so it's almost time for the car to start coming back together so I'm going to throw up what I've been up to..

After the leak at the track day we decided to pull the motor out as I was going to install a lsd and final drive in the gearbox anyways. After pulling it out I diagnosed it was only a pin hole in the oem water cooler line.

I decided that I wanted to run an aftermarket oil cooler now so I didn't bother replacing the line and removed the oem oil cooler setup. This involved getting a new oil filter bolt (90015-PH1-013) as the oem b16 one has extra length to go through the oem cooler setup.

After sorting that out I found a greddy oil cooler kit to suit a dc2r for a good price, I liked this setup personally because it has an inbuilt thermostat in the oil block so I don't have to worry about temps running too low at times. The oil block also has spots for sensors which saved me having to get another sandwich plate for my gauges. I also decided that I didn't want to run the stainless braided hose supplied with it so I bought 6meters of black -10 aeroflow braided hose to use on the oil cooler and my catch can. I didn't need to buy any fittings for the oil cooler as they came with Earls fittings from factory, good piece of mind running quality fittings. I also fabbed up a bracket to secure the cooler to the chassis, nice and solid (bolt hasn't been drilled on the upright in the photo, got a bit excited haha)

I also decided that while the car was off the road I wanted to install a proper catch can setup and delete the oem pcv system, generally people get oem prelude block pushlock fittings which will screw into the m28 fittings on the block and block off the "black box" hole with a welsh plug, but as I wanted to make things easier to remove I opted for a ipg breather kit, which consists of m28 to -10an fittings and a solid alloy plug with orings for the black box hole. Awesome quality on these pieces, do recommend them to anyone!

For the catch can itself I decided to follow my friend Alex and Dave's setup and run a petersons breather can, super quality piece of gear! I'll be running the -10 black braided aeroflow hose with fullflow aeroflow fittings throughout the whole system. I then made a bracket to mount the catch can to my torque damper bracket, nice and easy to remove and in a perfect location for the lines.

Once I had acquired all the cooler and catch can gear I got into cleaning the block, for this I blocked off the black box hole, left the oem plugs in the m28 holes and used an old oil filter, meaning all the block was sealed up to stop contamination. Taped up and bagged up the usual and got cleaning. Came out pretty well if I don't say so myself, you can see the new fittings and cooler block in the later photos. Oh and I also picked up some dei reflecta gold tape and put it on the sump near the headers, hopefully it'll help with oil temps too!

I found some Defi Bf Gauges too(oil pressure, oil temp and water temp) so I swooped them up and I'll be getting them all mounted asap too.

Now I had dropped over the gearbox to the shop, as I was having troubles with my reverse getting jammed I was replacing the 5/r reverse sleeve synchro setup and also installing a osgiken 4.9 FD, carbon ATS lsd and new OEM bearings and seals.

Everything was going fine until we went to replace the diff bolts on the lsd (it was used) as some of them were slightly rounded, turns out you can't use OEM bolts on an ats lsd as they are completely different. A day of stressing later and I sorted out some ATS bolts from Vivid racing, now this is where the drama started. I had ordered them on the 29th, I was emailed on the 3rd saying they had been shipped, few days later and no tracking number I decide to chase them up on Thursday, turns out the bolts hadn't even arrived at their warehouse but were due that day, WTF I say, when will they be shipped then I ask. Friday they will be sent out and you will receive a tracking number once they are sent. So I leave it till Saturday and nothing has come through my emails so I call them up, turns out that hadn't been posted yet and I would have to wait till Monday. This is where I started to get real angry as I was meant to be racing on the Sunday so I was already down one track day and I have another track day on the 19th which if they send them on the Monday the bolts won't arrive in Australia till the following week which means I will more than likely miss that track day too. The guy basically just avoided the responsibility on the phone and said he'd put a note down that they need to be shipped asap. It's now Monday and I've emailed them again to try get a reply of what is going on. To sum things up I will NEVER buy from Vivid again, lack of communication and misquoting my shipping 3 times (it's now 8 days late) is enough to deter me.

On a much better note, a friend of mine had an ATS lsd to suit a dc2r sitting around, thankfully he was kind enough to let me use his bolts and I'll give him mine when they arrive (whenever that is) Thanks Tim! I owe you huge man!
I'll be taking these down in the morning and hopefully I can pick up the box in the afternoon and get onto putting my car back together finally after being held up on a few bolts. Getting real excited to finally have it all done now.

Thats it for now, hopefully i'll have a good update after the weekend!
Thanks everyone

Time for a catch up with what is going on with the car....

Finished off the season of racing last year without changing anything else on the car, all ran reliable as usual and I wasn't really able to drop laptimes any lower but I was getting super consistant times.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/50566434@N04/8451800142/http://www.flickr.com/photos/50566434@N04/8451800142/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/50566434@N04/, on Flickr

I decided it was time for some changes with the car so it came time to revap the whole thing, first on the list was a respray. The paint had seen better days being 20+ year old milano red (pink) and the carbon bonnet was absolutely wrecked from flaking clear, it was done in two parts (outside first then I had the bay and interior done when I installed the new motor *more below*). Also installed a j’s duct with the paint too.

Along with the respray because I had been worried about people breaking the 6ul's I got some limited Jdmyard edition Buddyclub P1 Sf OneFive8 (15x8 +32) in matte black

Next up was the motor, I bought a b16b from a friend which also came with a b18cr crank, pistons and rods. I wasn’t interested in the oem pistons and rods but I wanted to stroke it so i went along buying everything I needed for the motor.
Specs are;
B16b block/head
B18cR Crank
Ek9 cams/gears and valves
Supertech Valve springs and retainers
81.5mm 11:1 Cp pistons and Eagle Rods
Acl Race bearings
Arp Headstuds
New oil pump, etc.
Orc Clutch

Everything was clearance and balanced accordingly as well but I did the assembly myself..

Got an extra horse power along the way..

At the moment I am still running in the new motor (650kms out of 1000kms so far) but i’m looking to race next weekend if I can get it tuned in time.

Few other things I bought for the car along the way were some recaro pole position seats and a J’s Racing Gt Wing.
Here’s how the car sits for now without the aero, more pics to come hopefully after next weekend!

I'm loving this. Super inspiring. I would love to take my hatch in the same direction. Good luck with the rest of your build!
