advanced timing...... what octane ??
i was planning to advance my timing and i was just wondering what octane will i need to use ??
a fwe guys on honda-acura said i can advance the dizzy all the way and still be ok with 89, is this true ??
if i dont run a high enough octane i will hear a ping right ??
since i never advanced my timing before how loud is this "ping" ??
thanx in advance guys
*i already tried the search feature but no luck*

advancing all the way to 5*? +/- 5* is all that you can do w/o removing the dizzy bolts completely. you can get up to 18* advance or retard but thats really a bad idea. with +5* you can prolly still run on 89 octane and be just fine. i put in 89 and my car hates me, its used to 93
I would suggest running at least 91 with 18 degrees. Its only a dollar more on a fill up and definately worth saving potential problems.
Remember that temps play a role in detonation and to err on the safe side.

why not just run premium anyway?
and right now in vancouver 87 is on avg 77.9/L with the occasional 73.9

Think about it though..
Premium is like what, 10 cents a gallon more at the most?
10 cents for a 10 gallon fill up= $1 You must be real broke to not fork out an extra dollar a week.
But yea.. if you arent knocking.. then there is really no need for higher octane.

You guys - remember that the higher the octane level, the more detonation resistant it is. That's all.
Higher octane fuel can be considered less explosive than lower octane fuels. If you run 91 octane fuel on a A6, it's not gonna make ANY difference in power or performance.
Advancing timing is one way to take advantage of the higher octane fuels.
Just wanted to make this clear before people start wasting their money on higher octane gasses, supposing that it makes your car faster....

I wish I live where you live. Usually, premium runs about 30cents more a gallon than regular in most parts of the bay area california. So that would be $3 more.
in general, the higher the octane the longer it takes for your engine to burn it off.
I treat my car to 102 octane every now and then in the summer, I have almost a nine gallon tank, and notice an extra 3-5 mpg with 102 compared to 93 octane. However I am paying like twice as much per gallon, so I guess it depends how much money you have to blow on gas.
paid $1.53/gallon today for 93
paid $2.90/ gallon for 102 last month

so on avg its about 3dollars more
which isnt really bad to be honest, bt i just want to make sure i can take an advantage of it so thats why i ask

thanx for letting me know of this post
mind if I throw a stupid question on this thread?
You guys are talking about changing the timing by loosening / turning the distributor. I thought that the ecu reads the dizzys position and automatically compensates, wouldn't that make it pointless to try to change the timing if the ecu is just going to change it back?

not. the car stock is suposed to be set up at 18+. its one tooth on the cam gear ahead of schedual per say. the dizzy can do plus or minus 5+ or if you spin it alll the way it 'll do 18+or- on top of the already 18* advancement

Unless you follow the correct proceedure for resetting the timing, any Honda ECU from 1988 and up will correct the changes you make at the distributor. It is necessary to short the timing/service check connector in order for the ECU to ignore the changes made at the distributor, and allow altered ignition timing.
102 octane ??

the sunoco by my house sells 87, 89,94,& 102.
My brother runs 102 in his Grand National all the time (if he is not running jet fuel
