96 Accord EX (Manual)
I noticed when driving (usually at highway speeds) I can notice a type of scraping noise coming out of the drivers side; and have no idea what it is. It sorta sounds what I would imagine is the brake sliding again the rotor; but I really don't think that's it (I've stepped on the brake during the noise to see if it gets louder or goes away and it doesn't affect it in the slightest) bumps also don't see to affect this noise, any ideas?

 

jack up both sides of the car and see if the wheel wobbles at all, it sounds like you may have a wheel bearing going out. when the tire is off the ground it should have no play. it will be pretty easy to notice once you look. if the drivers side doesnt do it i would check the other side as well as the rear just to be safe.

 

rust build up on the edges of the rotors or towards the center, air may be causing pad to float at speed and skipping across rough untouched ares of the rotor....

 

my car was doing this when the CV axle joints were on their way out

 

I'm pretty sure it's not the CV's. It didn't really start until it started raining more, so the rust build up may be a possibility.

Also, I know atleast one of the bearing in the back will need to be replaced at some point....so I'll definitely double check on that.

be careful with the bearings, without the proper tools you can sometimes damage the new one worse than the old one... <--- personal learning experience

 

It still may be the brake. The rust on the edge would be easy to check, just use a wire brush and scrub the edge of the rotor til rust doesn't flake off (Ok, I haven't done it myself, but that's the first thing I would try if I thought that's what it was)

I had a RWD car, an old chevy that made a noise like that.... almost like scissors... and it was the front brake caliper. somehow managed to lose a bolt out of the caliper (now I don't rightly remember if it was a guide pin or what) and it half closed and kind of got stuck (I ended up not even being able to go in reverse because it was stuck). Now this was a problem I had to take care of right away, but: If your caliper is stuck somehow, pressing on the brake pedal may not change it anyway.

you may also want to check your rotor for signs of unusual wear or unevenness.

Ive also heard of rotors wearing in the middle with a bit of a lip on the outside where the brake pad doesn't touch (probably improper installation) and if that's the case it could cause scraping too.

 

Necro on my own thread for an update.

It might (and most likely) is being caused by a broken strut mount bolt! Which I just found out about today when I went into firestone for an alignment, waited a good hour for my turn just for the guy to tell me it'd be a longer waste of time to align due to it. I had noticed for a long long time that the driver rear side seemed to be sagging, and now I know why!

Working on calling in my lifetime replacements with Advanced for rear KYB's and going to grab a bolt in the mean time during the order.....

 

1995 Honda Accord EX Manual 4 door 2.2L 4 cylinder with ABS.

I have a similar problem. I know that my caliper bracket on the front left side is scraping the rotor when i make a sharp right turn. I think I know how to resolve this issue but I wanted a more professional opinion.

I replaced the hub/wheel bearing, upper control arm, lower ball joint, and a few other components. I pressed the spindle into the bearing myself. ( I have a real honest to God press, so no I didn't use a hammer or any other tool to beat anything, and I am pretty sure I didn't do any damage to the bearing, although it could have been defective and I'm hoping that's not the case.) Is it possible that we didn't press the bearing far enough and it's that easy of a fix? We were a little unsure of how far to press it so we made it flush with the bottom of the rounded edge of the spindle. I think we needed to press a little more as I have said. Any suggestions?

Nevermind, I got it fixed. The brand new bearing was bad.
