Reliable Ignition for 450whp B18c1
In the past I have used several ignitions that for one reason or another always gave me problems. After frying my original distributor I realized many of them were due to something fishy in that distributor.
I have a fair amount of equipment in my garage that I could use but am considering getting all new in an effort to be done with it.
MSD DIS4
MSD 6AL
MSD Blaster Coil
AEM CDI box (the old one?) brand new. Actually I have two of them...
CBR Coils
I am currently using stock dizzy with 160k miles on it. Was working great but seems to be wearing out recently.
I tried to do the cop myself and failed. It didn't fire up and I tried to sync it up and had a backfire... so I went back to stock before I messed something up. If I go this route I am having someone else install it.
I have an AEM EMS (30-1040u). Was thinking I would just buy their off the shelf unit with the hall effect sensor and keep the old cdi box as a backup. I don't like the cbr coils because they need those stupid screw off top plugs so either way I am getting the pencils from AEM if I go that route. I don't really rev it out that high even though I have skunk 2 valve train.
Right now I am using the 4554 NGK with a crazy tight gap .013 and it was doing well for a few months but now I feel it breaking up in the top end. I have changed plugs, changed the gaps, changed the wires, rotor button and cap... Would sticking with the stock dizzy and switching to an external coil be a good option? Or do you all think it might be the ignitor not the coil wearing out.
In my searching I see people using the COP from AEM with the Twin Fire, without it, with cbr coils, aem coils, k20 coils. It is pretty clear to me that one of the best units is the M&W T1 but I feel like its out of my budget right now. I just want something that isn't going to misfire or leave me stranded on the side of the road. Sudden loss of power could be fatal since I frequent canyon roads. Rock wall on one side, white water on the other.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I spent several hours last night reading but couldn't decide on anything. Will be making around 450whp. I really would like to get a more complete burn as it is VERY helpful if I can get it to pass emissions and right now I am boarder line. Need to run it a few times for a pass. Running e85.
Thanks in advance.

My buddy d16 turbo had ignition breakage at 450+ whp on e85. This year we installed the mallory box, crane ps92 coil and relocate the ignitor inside the cabin. Will find out what it does tomorrow.

What is the ignitor bypass? Is this just a relocation or does it actually remove it?
My stock dizzy is not sufficient anymore on 350whp on e85 so I doubt it will be at 450. This is with fresh tune up stuff.
Thanks for your inputs. I really appreciate it. Sounds like the way to go without breaking the bank.

it gets rid of the ignitor all together so no more failures there but must be run in conjuntion with an ignition box and external coil

Made 505whp at the same lbs of boost @ 25 psi. No missing anymore. Made 457whp last year with stock ignition.
OEM is plenty capable of doing the job on that power level. If I were to think about upgrading, I'd just go with a COP setup and basically get rid of the distributor.
That's like cutting your arm off to remove a small wart on your hand.. not necessary. You still have to get rid of the wart and the regular medicine of oem (which isn't horsepower dependent) isn't cutting it.
I went with the...
Mallory Coil
Summit Ignition Box
Summit 8.5mm wires
MSD External Cap
Do I need the ignitor bypass circuit to use an AEM EMS without the ignitor? I thought I saw a diagram that shows how to do it without the circuit but I think the guy had a T1 trigger setup and didn't elaborate on that part.
Is this still regarded as the correct setup??
Thanks!

I searched all over this forum for info and found little bits but not the whole thing. So this is how I hooked up my MSD 6al w/Blaster SS external coil & how to bypass the honda ignitor. I bypassed the ignitor because was getting spark blow out if I ran more than 15psi. Now Im running 22psi with out a problem. I have attached a diagram.

Discontect the
honda wires
attached to
Ignitor --------------> MSD
Yel/grn --------------> White
Blk/yel ---------------> Red
Blue -----------------> Tach Out (mine worked with out any adapters - Im running a t1 cam trigger/hall sensor.)

--Proven to work wonders. You can even use the MSD 8207 Coil, and do the same thing.
