Engine swap D16y to a d15b jdm
Fairly new to this honda car stuff, so please bare with me.
I got an engine from engineworld, a jdm d15b. swapping in place of a b16 which has a vtech. I'm guessing i will need a new vtech controller, but not sure which type to purchase.
Also, will my ecu work with this engine.
I have a 98 civic, manual trans.
Any help for a newbee would be appreciated. Greatly.

There was no B16y anything so he must be talking D series.
And to top it off there is a VTEC version of both the US and JDM engines. OP has neglected to mention EXACTLY which ones he is referring to.
So since he said the one he is swapping had VTEC I'm going to have to assume he is talking about the Y8. If the D15b is non-VTEC then you will need the Y7 ECU.
I don't know why he thinks he needs a non-existent VTEC controller.

To summarize for the OP...
You most likely have a D16Y8 and you are swapping in a non-VTEC JDM D15B. Check the marking on your block to be sure.
The non-VTEC D15B does not use a VTEC controller.
You will need a different ECU. Make sure it is good for the engine and year. Should be OBD-2
The engine harness will need a little modification.
Notes:
I'm still a newb.
The FAQ section in this forum is awesome.
Post a couple pictures if you aren't sure what you have.
The D15Bs in stock at jdmengineworld at the moment all appear to be non-VTEC.
Do not EVER use "vtech" parts on a Honda engine. I think they make cheap consumer electronics and Honda engines have VTEC (no 'h').

Sorry. D16. Fat thumbs.
The question I guess would be, how do I tell if it is vtech or non-vtech. Is it as simple as looking at the cam? And will my current ecu work with the d15b jdm?
