Por15 - Sandable? Apply directly over bare metal?
On some spots in my engine bay and underbody where I have some surface rust.
Do you simply sand them to bare clean metal, brush on Por-15, and call it a day?
Or is there some sealers/ sanding/ better way to approach it?
My battery tray and engine mount look like crap

Follow their system.
They suggest using Marine Clean (Degreaser) before applying their anti rust paint for maximum bond. They also have a Silver Topcoat which has UV protection along with other strengthening properties.
I'm going all POR-15 out on my Del Sol.

Well I only plan to use it on suspension and underbody parts so I'll probably be fine without the UV topcoat, if they made the UV topcoat in black I may try it
I was more curious if you could sand it, and if ONLY por-15 had to be applied right bare sheet metal or cleaned/wire brushed metal parts... or if it was good/bad to seal or prime or anything first

It states for maximum hold to use on cleaned/bare metal. BUT it also says you can apply directly on rust.
Prime is last.
POR15 will not stick to clean bare metal. You WANT minimal surface rust for proper adhesion.
I purposely rust my parts before POR:

Hey Hwkze do you have any parts that have had por on them for a few years.I know it looks great when its freshly applied but how well does it stand up over time.

POR15 looks the same as it did the day you applied it as long is UV light doesn't hit it. That's the only weakness really (it will turn to powder if it's under the sun for long enough
)...I mean rocks and metal stuff can still chip it if hit hard enough, but for longevity nothing beats POR15. My Prelude and CRV suspensions have been done for 1-2 years now and they still look the same. It didn't hold up well on a muffler I did, but that is a heat issue.
It's a moisture-cure product, meaning H2O actually causes it to harden and cure, so you don't have chances of moisture bleeding under and rusting like most paints.
The only thing I can think of that might cause a change is if you clean it with something abrasive like a towel or scrub pad of some kind. That could scratch it and leave swirl marks.
