Default RUST - After I get rid of it, how do I keep it gone

Basically looking for some insight on how to remove and KEEP away rust.

I bought a Crx last night that has some rust here and there, only through spots are on the rear quarters. Basically, everytime I got rid of rust in the past (when I was younger) I would simply cut away the rust, and bondo/bondo glass the area back into shape

The rust always came back or some sort of body deformation happened under the paint etc.

Say I have some surface rust, along the side of the doors like this, would I simply grind/sand it down with sandpaper until no rust was visible... and then.. primer... seal.... what?

Or a more serious part on the car is this rear quarter, which is rotted through. Im assuming the rust area will actually be much larger underneathe. Do I simply cut/grind/sand away all the rust until I get to bare metal everywhere around it, then what?? Buy replacement quarter panel ??

Do I need to buy a replacement panel, or can I do it a cheaper way possibly? Maybe get rid of all the rust, seal it, then kitty hair/bodyfill it? Or will the rust come back??

May I even need to get at it from the inside??

Basically just looking for more LONG TERM solutions to fixing rust like this. Ive only ever attempted rust fixed when I was young and dumb. And obviously never did them right.

Im not to sure on how to tackle each kind of rust, what my options are, and how to properly treat the areas.

Hope this thread can educate me and some other on basic repairs like this.

Thanks guys

Bondo would not last. Cut it out with a grinder and fabricate a patch piece. You can weld it in or you can use something called panel bond which 3m makes. Then put the panel in, and use a skim coat of body filler just to smooth out the lines. Then you can sand, prime, paint, etc.

There is a rust neutralizer out on the market to spray on the metal you didnt cut out so that it would get rid of any little bits of rust on the panel.

Buying a whole panel for just that small of rust is just a waste of $.

I dont think my fluxcored welder is capable of welding sheet metal without burning through, and is this panel bond something that would be reasonably priced for 2 small patches like this??

Im going to get some por-15 or a clone of it for the not rusted through little areas. but the hole pictured is the worst.

I found replacement complete panels for $80 locally for both quarter panels.

If I were to cut out the rusted area, weld in the patch piece, grind it fairly smooth. What would be the next stpe when I am looking at bare smooth metal clean of any rust??

Prime it? Something else?

Thats were Im fairly stumped

The idea is to keep as much metal as possible. Keep in mind that I'm talking about the type of metal that will hold your car together. Not the metal that easily bends and crumbles when you touch it.

Use marine clean and clean the surface properly. Than apply POR-15's rust paint on the metal.

As far as the quarter is concerned open the area up and inspect it. If the area behind it is worse than the outer area cut the metal out. Apply marine clean on the inside quarter and finish off with the POR-15. As long as the area has been cleaned and painted with rust paint your fine. Unless you take pride in the car. Then you know what to do.

If the inside quarter only has surface rust just apply the POR-15 paint.

You will need to patch that hole up with a new welded in piece of metal. Bondo jobs are just...

Stick with POR-15.

Cool, you've decided to take it seriously with the panels. Pick'em up and weld them in. I'm sure you can find a tool rental shop and pickup a welder.

When your at bare smooth metal grab a degreaser (marine clean) and clean the area. Then apply POR-15 anti-rust paint, than apply your primer of choice.

Than decide on color of paint

It probably wont go very far past the bubbling.
$80 per panel is too much for that little of rust. That is nothing, I have seen way worse. You can get it done alot cheaper with just some sheet metal and a little bit of elbow grease.

Is was $80 for the pair of replacement quarters

Do they sell an aerosol sealer or something to spray on bare metal?
