how do you check to see if the valve guides have gone bad???
SGT has it pegged, Also, a build-up of crap on the valve stems is a good indication that oil is leaking through the guides at an excessive rate.
Guides can be shot at as little as 60,000 K miles. Older Mobil 1 synthetic may be a contributor to the wear as is high RPM usage. Lots of info in the Mobil Synthetic thread.

i personally have never seen a guide go bad. many head builders can attest to this.
some may say that they are bad because they are loose, but honda does this
intentionally because of the rpm they make the motor turn. if there is oil on the
stems, that just points to a leaky valve seal.
