Okay so I am assembling my motor and and my connecting rods and caps were separated and I dont know which rod caps go to which rods. Is there anyway to indicate which rod goes to which cap?

Also is there a way to tell which piston goes to which cylinder? Or it doesnt matter as long as they are all facing the correct way?

I ordered King bearings and the rod bearings didnt have color codes on them so using that to indicate location is not an option. Any help is greatly appreciated.

 

you should have marked them before disassembly. now your best to take them to a machine shop and have them re sized ant the cly Honed or deglaced then have them measured for bearing size

 

I got the block with the pistons out. And my block has already been bead honed.

 

Take the parts back to the shop.

 

So some one disassembled the motor, had it honed, and now you want to thow old used parts back in it? At least run new rings and bearings, and say a prayer

 

I got my block honed. And I put brand new bearings in it. And I ordered brand new hasting piston rings. What happens if the rod caps are placed on the wrong rod? If the wrong piston is placed in the wrong cylinder?

 

Could cause abnormal wear on the bottom end if the rod and cap are not perfectly aligned. Could over or under tighten rod bearing if all caps are not identical. I am unsure if cap and rod are line bored together from factory or if they are casted to a mold. maybe someone else on here knows. Pistons should be ok if you have all new rings.

 

I checked the clearances with the rod bearings and they all came up within spec. Should I still return the block to the shop to have them check the rods for their location? What are my options here?

 

Yes, you should take the rods and have them checked. The machine shop will use a bore gauge and rotate it in the big end to check for out of round conditions. Clearances will still be good, but you could have a tiny edge where the cap doesnt match perfectly. This can chew up the bearings, spin the bearing or other bad things. If they rebuilt the motor they will probably check the rods out for free or really cheap for you.
