Default What can I do to get a little extra out of a d15b7 overhaul

Im getting a d15b7 to replace my b8 engine in my 93 cx. I'm going to overhaul it before installing and wondered if theirs anything to add a little get up to it? I would like to replace pistons but where and what kind do I get. And would head machining help any if so how much can I take off before I get clearence and timing issues. I'm pretty new to Hondas but not new to engine building. Any help is appreciated.

Not worth it, just pick up a JDM D15b, d16z6, or d16y8.

I'm wanting to retain the good fuel mileage I get. I was considering a minime swap but no one can answer what fuel mileage they get in one. I'm not looking for all out power just more than my d15b8 has. It has a very hard time pulling hills and she's got 229k miles on it so she's a lil tired. That and I don't have much money to throw at it.

Swap the trans out for at least a DX/D15B7 trans. That will make more of a difference than anything you can do to a D15B7.

If you really want to try to do something with the engine you can run P29/PM7 pistons in it, but you'll have to run premium in it and get it tuned..

Also, if you're taking it apart, use an OEM D16Y8 headgasket. I'd also replace the stock headbolts with ARP headstuds. Generally speaking though it's a lot more cost effective to just buy a low mileage JDM replacement engine, than it is to rebuild one.

Its almost always cheaper to get a jdm motor rather than rebuilding

I can rebuild on my own minus machine work. I have the d15 block and b7 head. Another question I'm planning on getting a z6 intake and was wondering of a d16z6 rebuild kit work on a d15b7 ( piston rings bearings etc).

I mean evin if I went the Jdm rout. Where do you get one? And if I rebuilt my own I would have the peace of mind knowing what I had rather than taking someone's word that it's got xxx miles on it.
Maybe Im thinking to much. I wanted the mini me swap but I'm sketchy on what I would need and all the forums people argue that their way works and others don't and I really don't want a $600 yard ornimant that I screwed up because I listened to the wrong guy. I just don't have that kinda cash to throw around.

These sites are the best for picking up a relatively low km motor. But I'd rather fish out the engine through someone selling a complete swap or the whole car on craigslist.

An importer, most people will speak highly of hmotorsonline, but really most of them other than Tiger Japanese will sell you a good engine.

I've done and been involved with numerous JDM engine swaps, none of which came from H-motors so far, no problems yet. Some of these have been in and running for 5 years now.

IMO the mini-me is a waste of time and money, The D15B7/D15B8 bottom end still sucks, weak rods, smaller main and rod bearings etc. They're simple enough to build and all, just not worth what it costs IMO. The same goes for rebuilding a D15B7. Price out everything you're going to need, gaskets, seals, rings, bearings, timing belt, water pump, machine shop labor. Compare that to a low mileage JDM engine plus a timing belt and water pump.

where do people buy these jdm motors? because the only reliable site i've found is hmotorsonline. they have nearly nothing in the d-series department. and craigslist isn't used in my area.

I can do a full rebuild for around $650 inc head work. I'm going to tear it apart and see how the insides look before I make up my mind. It's got around 150k on it so maybe she's still good on the bottom end? I want to stay d series non vtec. Not looking to race it just cruise it around. Thanks for all the input

I had a nice reply to this all typed out the other day then lost it.

The best place to get a JDM engine is from an importer. JDM Source in Alberta and Sunrise JDM in Montreal are a couple of good ones. There are numerous others though (Tiger Japanese is really the only one I can think of to stay away from)

Replace the timing belt, water pump and thermostat with OEM parts, drop it in and forget about it for the next 100k
