i have a ZC?!?!
hi everyone. i don't know too much about cars, but have been learning for the last 3 or 4 years. anyways, i got a crx about a year ago. the guy before me said that the original engine was removed (because it was damaged...he didn't specify how). he said that a newer crx si (d16a6 correct?) was swaped into place on my car. i just cleaned the engine bay today. i thought it was pretty funny that the engine bay was so dirty that i couldn't even see the engine code stamped on the block. i took a rag and started wiping. it didn't say d16a6....it said ZC. ZC? correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't this a dohc 130hp motor from japan? are there sohc zcs too? i don't really know anything about the ZC, besides hearing about how they are cheap motors and lots of people put them in crxs. any information/comments would be nice. thanks!
It has two cams obviously. The upper timing belt cover will house two big cam gears. The DOHC model's valve cover has the spark plug holes right down the center.
If you have a doch zc, you wont have a timing belt cover unless you have an aftermarket hood.
I think the sohc Zc's had brown valve covers?

i have a sohc zc.
the valve cover is black, not brown. brown covers came on the usdm dohc zc - 119 hp.
the jdm sohc zc, from what i have researched has 120 hp, and has a black valve cover. the way you can tell the difference is the stamp on the block, (obviously) and the cam gear cover has all sorts of stuff written in japanese on it

****WHAT MAKES IT MORE powerful than the D16a?
****can't you just get a ZC BLOCK and use a D16a head?

Yeah oddly enough Im swapping my old si engine into my new si (old one has a B18b now). I always assumed it was a D16a6 so I never really looked...but hey what do you know it was a soch zc! I've been searching the web for more info...searched here...searched the d series website. Really havent found any solid info such as comp. ratio. hp. tq. If I find anything, or if anyone else does [Ill] post back here..

I don't get it, the engine in that pic looks exactly like the one in my 89 CRX Si, and I have never looked at the block...sooooo....is mine a SOHC ZC too?

Look at the stamp on the block. If it says d16a6 you have the stock USDM sohc Si motor. If it says ZC obviously you have the JDM motor.

the single cam ZC has domed pistons...
At least thats the word on the street...
and the Intake manifold is slightly bigger
some of the SOHC ZC's are carbed, Singgle cam ZC heads that are carbed have a hole in the back of the block on the distro side. The cam has 17 lobes, 16 for valves and one more for a fuel pump.

youre refering to the d16a1(1st gen teg) which is NOT the same thing as a ZC. d16a1 is basically a ZC motor with lower compression. no such thing as a USDM ZC.</TD></TR></TABLE>
The USDM D16A1 came in 2 versions. The 86-87 motor made 113 hp and has a brown valve cover. The 88-89 motor made 118 hp and has a black valve cover. I'm using a hybrid of the 2 engines in my 87 CRX Si.
The 88-89 USDM D16A1 and 88-91 JDM ZC also have the same compression. They both use the same pistons (PM7). See my sig for details.

lets not forgot about the sohc zc cam which is pretty much the only difference between it and the d16a6..
