Default Trying to reduce wheel hop. Engine mount questions. Help a brotha out.

I want to reduce some of the wheel hop in my 01 R. It's not that the hop is that huge of an issue for me since I mostly street drive and road course track the car....but I do want to autocross and drag race the R a couple times this summer. So I want to make it easier to launch.

Anyway...the concern is that I really don't want the car to become a vibrator due to mounts being too stiff. I basically want mounts that reduce the hop without making the car loud and buzzy and shaky.

My friend has a hasport mount (I believe 62A) for just his upper trans mount. He says it works well to reduce the hop even though he has all other stock mounts and no torque mounts (what a ricer!). His car drives pretty quietly and I didn't really notice any excess vibrations. So I think that that's the route I want to go. I see that a lot of other people just use the trans mount as well.

But what about mount inserts? That seems like a much more cost effective method...but is it a bad idea? Is there a big difference in mounts vs. inserts? My stock mounts are in great shape. But they're just soft since they're stock.

All opinions and input/comments are welcome as long as they're based on factual experience. LMK what you guys are using and how you like it.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I have 62a ha-sport mounts on my em1 (h22 swapped, all 3 mounts) IMO The vibration is very minimal (only at 500 rpm it vibrates noticeable) Other then that I have zero wheel hop.

For a while i was running only the rear and trans mount hasport on my hatch. I didnt like the way it looked so i installed the driver mount and the vibration increased a ton

^Is there a lot of excess cabin noise? I forget what durometer innovative mounts my friend put in his EM1, but they made everything LOUD as hell.

you really can't have both. the energy inserts are one option. they reduce hop substantially and are cheap to boot. only work well with oem mounts. aftermarket castings are usually too rough to fit

it's really just the two axle mounts that are the main cause of wheel hop.

if you don't go energy it's avid or hasport which are, near as i can tell, the same thing in a different wrapper

You might want to try a set of traction bars. Just make sure you get a set that has the integrated tow hooks.

if you want stiffer mounts, and dont want vibration

get a ati superdamper, not only is it good for the motor, but it will also reduce greatly vibrations transferred from the motor into the chassis

so with the pulley you can run all 65a or even 75a hasport or other mounts and not have the harsh vibrations normally associated with them

Is it a real EK9? I ask because type R's dont have sound deadening so the rattling and buzzing is amplified.

Looks like the energy inserts are the best idea if the stock mounts are in good condition.

I have STIFF mounts and there is a ton of crap under the dash that rattles. I would try some of the other suggestions before swapping mounts.

To address wheel hop, solid mounts help. so do new bushings for your front end. Look into a bushing kit for your LCA's and stuff. they help a ton

My bushings have 30-40k miles on them. They're good. I don't want solid mounts. I'm looking for an acceptable blend of launch friendliness and refinement.

You will never completely eliminate wheel hop with motor mounts. Traction bars are THE only way unless you have solid delrin or spherical bushings in your control arms and such. The play isn't so much in the motor, it is in the rest of the bushings further outward. I've tried HASPORT uppers and AVID lower torque mounts and all that got me was crisp shifting and a **** load of vibrations. I assure you motor mounts won't get rid of it if you have decent tires and yes I have Energy Suspension bushings in the control arms.

You may want to look at upgrading the front compliance bushing to a spherical. This should help to cut down on the fore/aft oscillation when you're launching (basically a similar approach to traction bars without all the extra hardware). The only company that I'm aware of that currently offers these is Kingpin. http://kingpinmachine.com/

you kind of answered your own question.

energy incerts and traction bars if need be. start with the energy incerts since they are 40 and go from there

Thanks again guys. I think I might try the motor mount inserts first. If I hate them, then I've only spent $20.

I don't really want to do a spherical bushing in my LCAs for several reasons lol. But thanks for the suggestion either way.

The hasport trans mount by itself is like $120ish on ebay. Also not bad. I might try that out if the energy inserts annoy me.

I wouldn't suggest running a full spherical setup on a street car either for a ton of reasons (harshness, wear, expense). The compensator location won't appreciably impact street manners and there's no reason (in this case) to bother upgrading from OE in the rest of the bushing locations.

I hate to see you throw money at parts that aren't going to fix the problem but it's your car and cash...
