Tranny shifts 1-2 and R fine. 3rd - 5th not so fine after rebuild.
For a friend I rebuilt his old cable B series tranny. Well, I would not say a rebuild, I replaced a 3-4 sleeve set, a seal, and a bearing that he bought from Synchrotech. Before the new parts it would not easily go into 4th gear and to get it to go in without popping out you would have to steadily pull back on the shifter till it went into gear and stayed. I also replaced the 3rd - 4th shifter fork with another that I found at my friends shop that was in better condition. After tons of times of steadily pulling back on the shifter to get it to stay in gear there was a nice groove dug into the shift fork from the slider.
So tonight was the first night of testing out the tranny. Supposedly, the report that I got is that 1st, 2nd, and R shifted fine. It did not want to go into 3rd, 4th, and 5th and that was while the car was rolling. Sitting still it still had some difficulty engaging those gears as well.
Before I gave the tranny back to him I ran it through several shifting cycles just sitting there on the bench and it seemed fine to me. This tranny is in a CRX that he has had some problems with finding shift linkages for. Just tonight he was telling me of two different linkages not working in the car before he found the linkages he is using now. He has recently replaced the shifter bushings and all that as well.
I am no tranny guru by any means, but I have rebuilt a couple K series trannies and some B series. Never really had any problems after reassembly. I am a little stumped on this one just sitting here thinking about it. Normally they go into gear better while rolling, but apparently this one is not and once it is in there it is hard to get it out of gear. There are only so many parts that could be the culprit of this problem.

I am going to try and take a look at it this weekend. I personally have never really heard anyone say that it shifts ok sitting still, but does not want to shift when the car is moving or the wheels are actually moving under the power of the engine. I am not sure they have even drove it yet, think they may have just tried it on jackstands.
