86 FZ600
The motor in my truck recently took a crap on me
But 290k miles out of an 84 truck isnt bad
I have a friend thats selling an 86 FZ600, beautiful red bike, Big Bore Kit, Full Yoshimira pipe, Jet kit etc for $1k
I asked if he'll trade me straight across for it and agreed. I've wanted a bike for sometime, and I am wondering if this is a good idea. Its an older bike, not too much power(I had a heavy foot in my truck
) and handles pretty good.
What do you all think? Yay or nay on this deal? I've already looked into an MSF course and plan to take it when I get the money. But for now, I'm just going to get my permit and start learning...

I'd personally stay away from an older bike w/ internal work. Course I also love the fzr600s. Tough call, how crapped is your truck? And also, do you have another cage for when it rains/snows?
I have to agree with Tony. Have a backup vehicle for bad weather. And be wary of the bike. Since you know the owner, you'd probably know if he keeps it in good condition.

I used to own an '88 FZ600 (first bike!). I got out most of the info on that link from my owner's manual. I paid $1200 for mine a few years ago, for reference. And that one wasn't in the best condition, aesthetically...
And definitely take that MSF class! ASAP!

I'm not exactly sure whats wrong with the truck, but from the sound its making trying to start it, I think I might have bent a valve and took out a piston, or something along those lines.
I live in bakersfield, so the winters arent really that bad, a little bit of rain here and there, but mostly just kinda chilly. I was planning on getting the bike and riding it until I can save up some more money to get a new car.
I do know the owner pretty good, he showed me some pics of it, and its extremely clean. I'm going over tonight to check it out, and hopefully get it soon...
Thanks for your replies!

Don't know if the trade is good, but I can tell you that the Fz600 is a tough bkie.
i bought one new in 86 and raced the **** out of it at Loudon( old track) and Daytona. When I sold it , is was still strong and ran well.
BTW, the best handling steet bike of the 80ies bar none!

I would personally stay away from such an older bike unless you have already ridden before and know how to restore it back to its proper running condition and in addition be able to maintain it.
For $1200, you can move up to a 89+ FZR600 which will be a much nicer bike handling and power wise.... Although for $1200, the ones I have seen aren't the prettiest looking ones out thered. But then again, since this will be your first bike, you shouldnt care chances are you will probably lay it down in the future....
