What would you use to replace OEM Spare tire lid?
The spare tired lid in my 1995 Integra snapped in two, because I had a sub box on it with no spare tire for support.
I want to replace it, but the OEM replacement is nearly 90 bucks! Considering this is basically thick cardboard being covered by carpet, I can't justify spending that much money on it. Since I do have some weight on it, it would be somewhat beneficial to get something a little more sturdy.. But I don't want to put a 50 pound piece of wood in there either.
For those of you wondering what I'm talking about, here is a picture. It's product #10. I will just use the old one to roughly trace an outline, and then cut out a new one out of the new piece of material.. Problem is, I don't know what to use! Thin piece of wood, like say wainscot? Although that stuff is usually pretty expensive. Thanks for any input.

I have found thin sheets of MDF board that works great for a heavy sub box. Go to your local Lowes and see what they have in stock. I plan on doing this again when I am finished with my eg6 build
3/8" plywood and a jigsaw. plywood is both lighter and stronger than mdf. it's also less dense which is why it's a worse choice for sub boxes but better for strength
oh, and buy one 2x4 to make legs out of. you'll need to cut small blocks to go under the plywood so the low spots make contact with the unibody

Racebym, the legs idea is a great one. Don't know why I didn't think of that before my original lid broke!
I don't have a busted lid to use as a template, so I am seeking the dimensions so I can make one. I really am confused where to start when I am looking at the back end of my 95 Teg...can you help? Thank you, so much.
Make a template out of cardboard, it's not too hard, just find a big cardboard box and break it down. After some trial and error of cutting and drawing, you should have a rough template, then you can make a better more exact one using another half of the cardboard, then use that one for the final template for the plywood or mdf board. Easy peesy

just curious; I'd still like to know what the original spare tire lid is made of. It's kind of ridiculous to pay 80-sum bucks for that flimsy thing; unless its some space age new technology superstrong compressed paper... that came out in the late 80's...
You can find the exact stuff at Home Depot for about 10 bucks a sheet. This is what I did.
It's a Cheap crappy board Called LDF. it's mainly used to make what is called Peg board.
2 most common reasons the board breaks is water damage and lake of support.
if there is ANY moisture in your trunk fix the tail light seales and the sun roof drain line.
