First, take off your drivers side wheel.
Second, find the right size socket for the CV axle nut. I can't remember what size it was, but it was huge. Take your car to Napa and ask them to help you find the right one, that's what I did. Take off that nut with the socket and wrench, set aside.
Third, Take off the bottom nut holding the brake assembly to the arm holding it. I think it is a 17mm socket. There is a codder pin in this nut, so if it does not, its the wrong nut. After you take the nut off, pull the brake assembly up so it swings free.
Fouth, pull our the left CV Axle. This is the only way to fit the Alt. out from under the car.
Fifth, unbolt your alternator and the serpetine belt on it. If your belt is in good condition, don't buy another one. They are hardy things.

I've managed to get it out from underneath without removing the axle once, just as "KINGVEM^^ED6" suggested. You can also just remove the end of the axle from the hub/knuckle and you'll have enough room to get it out that way. Found out later you can maneuver through the passenger side underneath the intake manifold like "singlecamsaint" suggested.

its so much easier to do it that way, and a lot less work. you just need to be careful of the wiring harness and the above mentioned heater hoses. just remove them if you have to, but if your good enough theres no need to

I've never had to remove the axle and never had too much hassle.
From memory

Remove wheel
Remove plastic piece of crap behind wheel
Disconnect electrical from alt
Loosen bolts
Drop down and wiggle around (axle) and pull out

If this hack can do it, anyone can. Isn't there a online manual somewhere cuz the helms is God and will walk you through it?

Super Simple disconect + on battery remove driver tire jack up car disconect elecrtrical on alternator remove two bolts on alternator on top go under car and remove one bolt from under alternator now the tricky part was in order to take out alternator you have to remove the bracket that holds the alternator two 14mm bolts BAM alternator comes out super simple! total time from start to finish 1 hour.

I have been unable to get the long alternator pivot bolt to back out so I can remove alternator.

I tried spinning nut back on end of bolt and tapping nut & bolt with a mini-sledge but it did not loosen.

Any suggestions?

I am doing it in the driveway on jack stands so I can't see the square end of the bolt to see if there is a way of prying it out.

remove all necessary parts that attaches to the alternator.

remove the master cylinder from the booster (DO NOT REMOVE THE BRAKE LINES) and move it upwards. If you have a buddy then let him/her hold it there while you wiggle it out. why take off your axle? wtf?

I have done it MANY times without the need to jack up the car or take any wheels off.

The help I need is how to get a recalcitrant alternator pivot bolt out/off. It is frozen since it has been 20 years since it ha been installed.

Then I will use one of the 3 good ways to get alternator out.
1. Driver's wheel well (had to open this access to wwork on bolt)
2. Up past loosened master cylinder
3. Passenger side past detached heater hoses
