Can you do the MPFI Swap with a 4-speed STD?
Someone was saying that if I wanted to do the mpfi swap, I'd have to upgrade to a 5-speed transmission because that's what the ecu is for. I pulled some of the parts from a wagon with mpfi and some from an si, and I'm ready to do the swap once I can find some help. But I can't afford to change my car to a 5-speed. Nobody told me I'd have to do that before, is it really necessary?
i don't think so... the tranny is independent of the ecu.. unless its an auto of course. it should be fine, i used a 4 speed with my zc for a while, but i don't recommend it, its painful.
What the hell are you talking about! Of course you can do the swap! There are alot of people on here with the 4 Speed Tranny... if your not sure please don't post things, they will mislead the newbies and then they will spread the false information and on and on... all because of you.
When you do the MPFI swap your getting rid of the DPFI ECO for the MPFI ECU so their is no problem with tranny's or anything like that... any D series will work... keep the 4 speed and use some crazy spray, or go with a 5 speed and go all motor... the sky is the limit!

"i don't think so" means, i don't think its necessary to use a 5 speed. like sohc notec said, you CAN use a manual 4 speed with mpfi. relax.

yeah, i understand. it just pisses me off that people (i'm not singling you out, i see it all the time) are always just so ready to flame others. i mean, it seems to me that the point of having an online forum is to learn, share knowledge, and promote interest in the honda hobby. personally, i feel its discourages those who don't know a whole lot from actively participating in the more technical/physical/theoretical topics.... which to me seems totally counterproductive. i personally have a friend who doesn't post because of this. he's a structural engineering major for god's sake! he should be posting and adding to the honda-tech community's collective knowledge.
anyway, i agree, it sucks to have false info passed around! but, if you read my post more carefully in the 1st place, you'd see that i said what you said. so why police the innocent? i should take my own advice and ******* relax.

Accually same thing with any tranny. Has to be same year as the flywheel and clutch disc assembly.
just make sure that u use a 88 clutck kit on a 88 tranny, bc they are diff from the 89-91 ones...
So, while these guys are bickering back and forth, I'll tell you, I have a '91 std with the 4-spd and I performed the mpfi swap. no problem!!!!
You don't even have to change from auto to 5 - speed. You can use a 90 - 91 Civic Sedan EX ECU, but it has to be from an automatic, obviously.
well i figured everybody already knows can use 89-00 clutch disc with 89-00 trannys all use same flywheel and the imput shafts are all the same, 88 is an exception to the cause different p-p and clutch disc. He didn't say what year tranny he was using. and if the fly wheel is from 89+ and he has a 88 STD will not work. Thats what I was givin a heads up on. no bickering just stating the facts.
