Default best street pads 2012?

due to whiners i shall rephrase the question. looking for the up to date best pad with great initial bite, good cf and decent temp range. my interest are in 3 primary pad sizes, the smaller front brakes (93 del Sol Si), 10.3" front GSR brakes, and also ITR/NSX front brakes.

5 years ago the three of the top autox pads i recall were Axxis Ultimates (now called ULT), Hawk HP+ and Porterfield R4S. anybody ever tried KVR? I remember seeing their ads since long time ago. never tried their stuff though. are they just big names re-branded??

Are they still the best options or are there newer kids on the block? on google i found: http://brakewarehouse.com

and they have several brands of semi metallic, ceramic, metallic and kevlar pads too. anywhere from $20-$60 per pair...

thanks for any up to date inputs is appreciated. TIA! hater/whiners leave this thread.

ps, found a topic of related interest.

https://honda-tech.com/forums/showth...rake+autox+pad

caliper & rotor weight = major or minor difference?

"The difference between ITR calipers, 11.1" rotors & HF calipers/9" rotors is 28 LBS
How much does that matter on the track in terms of performance? "

wow... is that just for the fronts??

Street pads? OEM. How does this relate to RR/AX/TA?

I ran HP+ the entire summer last year and I regretted it. I still haven't gotten off all the baked on brake dust. Do yourself a favor and just go OEM for the street. When you get to the track, swap in those Axxis ULT's (what I use now and highly recommend you stick to) Pads take me no longer than 5 minutes a wheel now.

I leave my XP10's on full time, but I also rarely drive the car outside of tracking it though.

Because you're in the ROAD RACING/AUTOCROSS & TIME ATTACK FORUM asking about street pads. He's not complaining he's simply wondering why you're here.

saw this on of of the site:

AXXIS ULT BRAKE PADS
(Formerly known as AXXIS ULTIMATE BRAKE PADS)
For high-performance requirements

Axxis ULT Brake Pads, formerly known as Axxis Ultimate, are quickly developing a loyal following in North America because they have one of the highest coefficients of friction of any brake pad available for street use on the market. Anything higher than this is a race pad. Axxis ULT is a reinforced ceramic material which gives you exceptional braking power with little pedal effort and it performs every bit as well at 0°F as at 900°F. This is not a low dust or a long life pad (although it is cleaner and will outlast many O.E. brake pads) and it will be more aggressive on your brake rotors than other Axxis pads, but for performance, it is second to none.

Driving Styles:

Import Applications: for ultra-high performance requirements
Domestic Applications: suitable for all driving conditions

Import Application Technical Features:

Special ceramic formulation with high co-efficient of friction
Designed for extreme driving conditions, with maximum stopping power
Highest possible resistance to brake fade at high temperatures
Low non-ferrous metal content
Integral shim for quiet operation, where recommended by engineering
Track-worthy, road-friendly

Domestic Application Technical Features:

Original Equipment ceramic technology
Smooth braking, with long pad and rotor life and low dust
Highest possible resistance to brake fade at high temperatures
Organic ultra quiet formula
Premium shims, where recommended by engineering, and angled chamfers
High performance and first-rate aesthetics

AXXIS XBG BRAKE PADS
(Formerly known as AXXIS METAL MASTER BRAKE PADS)
For sporty driving conditions

Formerly known as Axxis Metal Master, these brake pads are the best overall value in the Axxis portfolio. They give you exceptional friction effectiveness and resistance to brake fade while not sacrificing the low noise or low dust characteristics that Axxis is famous for, and giving you outstanding brake rotor and brake pad life. These pads are ideal for any car or truck where the original pads wore out in less than 15,000 miles and for any car or truck driven aggressively or on hilly roads. Here again, your wheels will stay clean while your performance and your pad life will improve over O.E.

If you have a European car and you are not happy with the life, feel or performance of your O.E. pads, these are the brake pads you need.

Driving Styles:

Sporty roads requiring aggressive braking
High speed, high temperature, optimum stopping power

Import Application Technical Features:

Designed for applications requiring high performance
Premium quality, low-metallic formula
Exceptionally smooth braking action, exceptionally high fade resistance
High pedal feel with optimum stopping power under all conditions
100% shimmed ensuring squeal-free braking

Domestic Application Technical Features:

Application specific semi-metallic formulations
Provides shorter stopping distances
Severe-duty formulas for select light truck and SUV applications
High fade resistance for better stopping power at high temperatures
High quality compressed-layer shims to ensure squeal-free braking, where recommended by engineering

i thought it was interested according to their own materials ULT are not that rotor friendly. does it eat rotor at both high temp and cold? i guess ULT is more of a race pad than street?

I hear that EBC blue stuff is pretty good... or was it the yellow stuff?
Wait.. im confused.. maybe it was the green stuff?

Highly featured in Super Street, and Sport Compact car so it has to be good

Whats wrong with OEM honda, and driving the car civilized on the street?

This question coming from a guy wanting to be a Honda Challenge director of a region?

Seriously though for street cars I use Duralast, because vato zone replaces them for FREE every time they wear out if you have a receipt.....

dirty: EBC are the absolute worst pads i've ever used in terms of wear. what's worse is i first tested/used them in the late 1990's. and i'm pretty sure they didn't bother to change their formulation at all. because over the years i still hear ppl say how fast they were out at the track. STAY AWAY from EBC. might be okay for street i guess but never again for me...

cuz i like to dive bomb everybody and practice my threshold braking at every stop sign/light... ;-) stock pads are the suck. they are also not cheap compare to the OEM replacements.

jw: pepboy raybestos ceramics were my favorite cheap pads in my track whoring years. sub $60 a pair, life time warranty (usually they replace it one time for me because i'd bring them back after a weekend or two and they are down to the backing plate and i play dumb and go hey these are defective... lol). it was the pad i used when i won the time attack event at Arizona. not bad for a daily beater with all budget stuff:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpi7Q1hI-Wg

Powered by AKMEE Engineering's SOHC VTEC valve train kit. http://www.akmee.com

Couple of laps at Firebird International Raceway in a time attack session (1 warm up lap, 2 hot laps) in Jan. 2006.

It was an 800 mile drive from SF Bay to Phoenix... my Civic (aka project remix, 145 whp, 2150 lbs, for details of the car see http://www.g-speed.com/remix ) ran 1:12.5 which was good for 1st in class and 4th fastest overall against hi whp (fastest car of the day, a high powered Subaru WRX that makes 600+ whp, 3300 lbs). for reference, a full race Honda Challenge H1 DC2 Integra (about 210 whp and 2300 lbs) ran 1:10's the same day. remix representing Honda SOHC power!! daily driver 87 oct.

The class I competed in was 200 whp (wheel hp) and under. My car makes 145 whp so it is underpowered by a bit. But it makes up for it in cornering speed and braking. FIR has longer than 1/2 mile front straight so high power cars have lot of advantage here...

Nice track machine buddy! What are your plans.
I took a peek at it while I was over there test fitting Kiwi's splitter air dam.

I recently beat the crap out of some Posi Quiets at Willow Springs big track in my SRT-4. Try looking at those, they didn't let me down one bit.

I used to run hawk HP+ and recently switched to the XBG. The Hawks were noisey and really rough on my rotors. I thought the pedal feel was inconsistent and hot and cold braking was conciderably different. The XBGs are very quiet and have a very consistent pedal feel. They brake the same hot or cold. Not as harsh on the rotors. The braking feel is really linear.

I have had good experience with the Porterfield R4S, just dont expect to do anything more than street driving/autocross with them.

Also, EBC has changed their pad compound and it is MUCH improved. My wife has a set of Red Stuff's on her daily driven Sti and it has seen and stood up to track abuse without any fade, noise, or excess rotor wear (Sti rotors are EXPENSIVE!!!!)

hey Larry, nice to meet you in person. i bought Mike Lock's built H2 B20B motor so the current plan it to run it in NCHC H2 class and maybe make it to some MPTCC events too.

gonna have Eric do a few things to it. add gussets for A and B pillar, maybe few more cross bars to stiff it up some. as you saw the skin for sunroof is terrible, plus one time in 2007 i forgot to put on the hood pins and the CF hood smashed the root top pretty good. i'm just gonna remove the entire roof and weld on a piece from junk yard or something. CF hood also coming apart and needs to be repaired... lots of things to do...

Frank - are you looking for street pads, "mountain" run pads, dual use track/street pads, or full track pads?

My H2 car has been using Cobalt XR-3's front, and Carbotech XP-8's in the rear, I'm contemplating moving to Carbotech XP-10's in the front. I'm using the Integra caliper/rotor combination, with a minimum weight of 2,280, but I've been sitting at ~2,325ish in the car.

are you saying Axxis XBG (metal masters) owns Hawk HP+ in every aspect? good to know. thx.

austin: street/autox/touge pads. not really talking about track pads in this one... mainly needs some new pads for cheap sohc. what ever pad it has, it is THE SUCK. i can hardly stand it much longer...

you're running Colbalt fronts and Carbotech rears? how did that come about?

Look into the Carbotech, or Cobalt street pads, I liked them both when I was autocrossing.

I had a set of XR-3's on the front, and after testing decided that I needed more bite in the rear, discovered that I had stock Integra pads, so we grabbed a pair of pads that Graham had used in his father's car before converting to ITR pads/rotors. I was going to pick up a set of XP-10's from Graham, but the order had already been placed and I needed pads in 3 days, so I called up Andy and ordered what I already had on the car. Replacing the front pads is something that I need to do before I head back out on the track, as my current ones are down to the rivets. I'm undecided if I should pick up another set of XR-3's(or possibly the XR-2's), or grab a set of XP-10's.

carbotech street pads were like the panther+ right? i ran them in early 2000's they were pretty good. but it was over $100 a pair... Axxis ULT are only like $60 street price. i wonder how they stack up against each other back to back??!

so i guess cobalt street pads are now called CSR? dude they want $200+ a pair. screw that... way too expensive.

jw: which one did you use?

Posi Quiet Semi-Metallic Brake Pads
Posi Quiet Ceramic Brake Pads
Posi Quiet Extended Wear Brake Pads

IMO yes. I had stoptech slotted rotors up front and brembo blanks in the rear with Hawk HP+ and it was decent but like I said very noisey, inconsistent and harsh on the rotors.

I got my rotors and pad here: great to deal with and great prices. I went with slotted and drilled front and rear with the XBG pads.

there are several interesting options here:

http://catalog.brakewarehouse.com/Sh...Rotors&mode=PA

anybody ever ran Performance Friction's _Carbon Metallic_ brand of street pads? if i'm not mistaken that's one of the first high performance street pads ever offered. i don't believe i've ever drove a car with that compound though...

i'm probably going to order a set of Rotex Friction's Gold RTX Premium Kevlar Brake Pads. it's only $35.99. metallic kevlar... sounds interesting. :-)

Rotex Brake Pads
Rotex brake pads are the finest Kevlar metallic pad to date. Rotex brake pads offer excellent stopping power. Rotex brake pads are a combination of top-rated performance and a long service life.

How Rotex brake pads work
The friction material in the Rotex brake pads blends Kevlar with metallic soft steel wire and powdered sponge iron for maximum heat transfer, and silver virgin graphite for smooth quiet performance. This 60% metallic blend reduces vibration, which causes squeal, and runs virtually dust free eliminating the common problem of "black dust" on the wheels. Rotex brake pads are thus, perfect for drilled or slotted rotors.

Rotex brake pads are the lowest dusting pads we have ever seen. This is in part to its unique Kevlar bonding material used in production of the brake pads. The Rotex gold brake pad on average will last 30-40% longer than an organic brake pad. Rotex’s aggressive metallic content assures that your vehicle will stop quickly, yet is formulated for the street as to not be abrasive to your rotors. Rotex was originally developed for import vehicles such as Mercedes and BMW to provide a pad with exceptional stopping power, but without all of the dust that the factory pads emit. Now Rotex covers a complete line of foreign and domestic applications, so all auto enthusiast can enjoy the benefits of dust free wheels.

Key Features of Rotex Brake Pads
Quieter by design
Rotex brake pads are slotted and chamfered like original equipment
Highest quality raw materials to meet rigid control standards
Special graphite in the premium metallic means low or no dust on expensive wheels
Formulated to exceed industry standards for wear and durability
Leaders in new part number availability

Manufacturing
State of the art equipment to produce product of consistent quality and specifications
400 ton cure process to insure consistent product density
Powder coated paint system to resist plate corrosion and improve fit
Diamond wheel grinders provide a consistent flat mating surface to the rotor
New ink jet edge codes for easy product identification
Members of F.M.S.I., S.A.E., A.P.R.A. to keep current with industry changes
