Anyone know what is up with this short block?
Been looking for a short block to rebuild for a while and finally got lucky. Its got P5P pistons so I suspect its from a BB6, unknown km's but its closed deck. What struck me as odd was the lack of the balancer shafts/assembly. My previous 5th gens/P5M engines have had the balancer shafts so I was expecting it to be present. Does that mean Honda deleted the balancer shafts to get more power for the S Spec/Type S engines?

Anyone else ever seen this? I would guess its from a Sir S-spec BB6 prelude, 1996 ish. Also, I have a P5M head which I want to mate with this block; will it bolt on fine with the P5P pistons (valve clearance wise; altered valve angle on the type S head is my concern)?

That is an odd block, it's closed deck which is unlike anything that came in a BB6 and the 1 Type S motor I'd seen personally had balance shafts. This is a really odd engine block you've got there, never seen one like it that had no balance shafts from the factory.
Then it is indeed an odd short block.lol.
Was trying to find a type s short block on google images to check, all had balancer shafts except one photo which was the one I added on here.haha.
So the type s had balancer shafts, and I am sure all the black tops would have had it and cant see the S spec block being any different. Can't explain why this one doesn't have it but it should make for an interesting engine being closed deck.

Odd for sure...if someone deleted the shafts they did an OEM-quality job by the looks of it. Where did you pick that up from?

Pull the oil pump, it's already leaking around the back anyways and see if the bearings are there as well as if the oil passages are blocked off.

there is a guy on ebay selling balance shaft deletes and comes with plugs like yours has, does not come with block off plate like KS. has similar billet block off on right, prob pressed into oem housing. all likely done by prev owner as dont think there was a H22 from factory w/o balance shafts
This got me thinking, in theory you could pull the front shaft and plug it like that, and leave the rear shaft in place, while removing the gear on the rear assembly and plugging it like that. Might be worth a look as well, although I would hope someone wouldn't go to the effort to do that.
Got it from a local scrap yard who were going to bin it due to taking up space for too long... Think it must have been on ebay at some point and never sold.
Definitely a clean delete job if not factory. Will crack it open in the near future for a rebuild but still gathering parts etc. Who knows what will be inside if its been cracked open. Most likely done by the previous owner if ebay stocks similar plugs.

I don't know much about the Si-R, but it looks like someone had built a decent track motor previously. Closed deck 4th gen block with Type-S pistons stuffed in for higher compression. Balance shaft delete for the extra hp. The pistons and block are a giveaway to me that it's not stock, as I'm fairly sure all 5th gens (P5P) were open deck.
In either case, valve angles were all the same, and if anything the Type-S/Si-R pistons would have more of a valve pocket for the bigger cams that come with them, so you'll be fine with a P5M head with stock components.

I was thinking the same thing. The only thing I didn't know is if the Si-R was different since it didn't come with the ATTS, but the motor has the same specs as the Type-S, so I'm guessing it's mostly P5P components. Never seen one though, so I don't know what they look like.
