it's normal for ludes to burn oil. especially when Vtec is used pretty often. carry a qt of oil in your trunk and check every 2-3 gas station stops.

Sick info, OP. Based on what you've written, I think that it'd be totally easy to diagnose what the issue is and if an issue actually exists.

Almost every single DOHC VTEC motor that honda made is known to consume oil
Most of those engines rev to 8k+, have oil squirters aimed at the bottom of the pistons, and have short gearing...meaning relatively high revs all the time. Why would they NOT burn oil?

H series VTEC motors are worse than any other Honda motor as far as oil consumption. The amount of oil burn that constitutes "Normal" oil consumption is a tricky term. Preludes be burnin them oils, y0.

Try not using synthetic oil, and switching to a heavier oil. It should help burn less oil.

^Good advice. Another good thing to check would be the PCV valve. I replaced the PCV and did a vented breather/catch can setup on my S2000 and the oil consumption went down DRASTICALLY. That car used to drink down oil when I tracked it and consume a bit on the street. With the new setup, I took at 4600 mile trip and it didn't burn a drop! The consumption at the track went down a **** ton.

Also, a lot of people just assume that the car is burning excessive oil when they "RIP 'TEC" or get up into higher RPMs. Some of that smoke is just from running rich. Some of it is undoubtably oil.

^ as above, oil thickness is a big one. Used 5W-30 Castrol synthetic once and never again, drank it like petrol. 10W-40 Valvoline VR1 has been my gold standard since.

Interesting that the vented catch can setup reduced consumption dramatically. So you removed the PCV valve all together?

I have my PCV feeding into a catch can which captures a decent volume of oil in a short time. I have also noted that the intake breather has recently started pumping out heaps of oil, noticed it when I went to clean the pod filter, saw a fair bit of oil within it and the intake pipe and was stunned. Normally it gets pulled into the manifold but the throttle blade was oil free... Guess blow-by is increasing...

Low mileage JDM H22a, I use Mobil1 5-30, change it every 5k and never even have to pay attention to the dipstick since it never moves. On the other hand I only open it up only once in a while.

I have a '98 prelude, bought it not long ago and it was burning a significant amount of oil. It has 185k miles, changed the valve guide seals, and it consumes minimal if any oil now.

I've got a 92 Si4WS with the H23A which is a non-VTEC but I only lose 1 quart of oil in 5000 miles. Granted I did just turn over 100k miles last week. I have been using full synthetic oil since 40k miles.

probably. you're also short circuiting breathing by using the pcv to catch. take the block vent to catch. the pcv is designed for vacuum to be pulling on it. when that's gone flow is non existent. another popular trick is to use the MKIV supra pcv valves. they flow considerably more than the honda PCV valves and fit many makes and models. direct fit in an ITR, acura CL etc
