Clutch recommendations? ZC DOHC build
I going to slowly start building my motor pretty soon. Since everything in the block is brand new and has a few upgrades I'm gonna just do I/H/E, Bisimoto Level 2 ZC cams, cam gears and most likely their spring and retainer set. Hoping for 150+ (I'm shooting for ~160ish tuned). First thing to be done will be a clutch and most likely a 10 lb flywheel. I'm thinking about maybe an ACT clutch? Recommendations? (brand & stage)
Go big or go home, LSD motorsports stage 3 unsprung....
Same price as your girly clutch, you pick one up for 250$
Never have to worry about clutch slip again and you might even gain some muscles in your leg.
I run a 185whp ZC and I run unsprung 6 puck all day long.
First time I bought a clutch it was a centerforce dual friction, and I tried to do a second gear burnout one night and fried it.

When shopping for a clutch, it's not hp to be concerned with as much as it is tq rating. A stock replacement should be just fine for an i/h/e/tuned ZC. And you get to keep the chicken leg.

Stick to a Exedy Stage 1. It took years of abuse from my sprayed B16 and built B20vtec and now resides on my brother's B16 with plenty of life left.
I have tried many clutches for my DOHC ZC and just recently found one that I love. It is the Action brand clutch. It is a 6 puck with a sprung hub. I got it through bisimoto's website. It is 350 dollars and rated for about 500 ft/lbs. It is smooth enough for take off that I can't complain and doesn't feel like it is going to break my driveline the way the my Exedy stage 2 felt.

Well its basically gonna have a built head. I was thinking about just doing a stock replacement but was unsure if it will handle the setup
Exedy Stock replacement will be fine. I'm currently using the Hydro B-Series version on my B20Vtec, and before I retired her last week, it had no problem holding the power with big sticky tires.

Not to burst your bubble, but you're wrong. Maybe if your sh*t is set up completely retarded. A stock, fresh ZC makes about 110-115 whp. With those upgrades and a good tune, i have no doubts that i can hit at least 150.
I think this is what i will go with. Reasonable price and i dont see any reason why it wouldnt be sufficient
we have been working with and building and dynoing these DOHC ZCs since 1999 and i can tell you for a fact that you will not get 150whp with I/H/E and stage 2 camshafts - you will be lucky to get 135 - fresh stock DOHC ZCs with I/H/E will dyno between 115-120whp (most we have ever seen is 122) - stage 2 cams will not give you 30-35whp - ain't gonna happen - our DOHC ZC is completely stock except for stage 4 camshafts and running dual Weber carbs, dyno tuned and only makes 150whp

Um, JLI knows his ****, as he is one of the top ZC resources (and is always helpful).
And I'd have to agree with him; your expectations do seem to be a bit inflated. If you can get those results, great, but don't be too disappointed if you don't.
I have Bisi cams (Stage 1, though), and really like them. However, plan to be on top of them if you do order a pair - they have a habit of dropping their customers into a black hole when they have their money. Web has just about the same grind (Bisi uses Web for manufacturing them), and they tend to be more helpful, so think about them as well when you're doing your research.

I have a stage 2 clutch and a an Si trans on my dohc zc and it is nice for DDing. Exedy is fine even a stage 1 would probably be enough for a mostly stock zc. Although I was used to a stock d15b2 so anything is an improvement.
I don't doubt that he knows what hes doing, but still, ive seen people put out a lot better numbers than that. Maybe better tuning? idk. I'd honestly just be happy with a good improvement. But i feel that with the right set up, i can hit 150. 35 whp over what they should be making stock doesn't seem out of reach at all.
Welcome to owning a Honda D series.
