I recently got a 91 DX hatch, the previous owner replaced the gas tank and he mixed the wires around so now when the tank is full the gauge reads empty, so I figured it would read full when the tank was empty but it dosent it will only go to half a tank never any fuller, and after it reaches it the car start to stall when coming to a stop and between downshifts, so my assumption was its out of gas, but when I go to put gas in it I can't put more then 8 gallons in it and that's overflowing it, has anyone else had a similar problem like this?

 

I'm having a similar problem. Ever since I changed the fuel pump the car act as if it going empty as soon as the fuel gauge reads just under half. When I put fuel in it I can only get 6-7 gallons in. Not sure why.

 

i was recently told about a gauge sensor that could possibly be going bad, but i also noticed a gas tank strap on my car that broke and the tank sits crooked so that might have something to do with my problem

 

The float sensor rod may have been bend during the fuel pump removal or installion. Or the like you said the gauge sensor is going bad.
