Default K series transmission HP limit?

Hi guys.
What power K series transmissions would handle? Are they strong as B series transmissions? If not that is the weakest point of these transmissions?
Thank you!

It varys from aplication to aplication power, chassis, driver, its more complicated then what power it can hold.

I wouldnt consider the k gear sets to be as strong as the b series gear sets.

But, they still are not as weak as everyone makes them out to be. We have a bunch of ~500whp street k series cars on all stock transmissions.

K series transmission suck b series transmissions are soooo much better. If you shift the car like u mean and dont **** like a grandma it will break 2nd. Just look at the fastest times from stock trans b series vs stock trans k...i broke 2nd in my allmotor k crx with 200whp on the street...

We have also built plenty of 500hp cars on the stock tranny, it seems to be more how you drive rather than the actual power level that breaks them.

From what I have seen and heard about from various people the K20 engines seem to break the stock tranny less than the K24 engines. This is in various setups as well, meaning all motor and boosted setups.

i can't say that i disagree with what everyone above as said due to what i have heard but Jeff M (91redteg) with the green k turbo hatch from Speedfactory made 860+ last yr and never had any issue's with his actual transmission other than breaking a input shaft. He drove it around on the street roughly 4-5 times a week commuting 60+ miles a day and went 9.8X's and the gear set it self was still perfectly fine and shifted great. He's actually using the existing tranny from last season for this season with no real plan to step up to anything bigger.

I think the shifter/engine mount setup has a lot to do with it as well the amount torque the car makes. I really don't think the gears inside of a K are any weaker than B series, it's just that your average K has sloppy cables and makes a lot more torque.

According to the internet, my stock EP3 transmission should have blown itself to bits about 200whp ago.

<-- 614whp, stock transmission. Haven't broken a single one.

I never broke my K series tranny either and that was launching it hard at the track on slicks and everything else. My setup was not putting out a ton of power all motor, but it ran really well for what it was. I sold the car to a friend, he took it to the track once after owning it for awhile and managed to crack the bell housing. Everything else is fine in the tranny after roughly 25k miles.

I just talked to someone the other day whom said they knew of a car they were working with that has been on the dyno about 6 times now and it broke the tranny each time. This was a K24 turbo setup.

My stock ep trans has 150k miles on it , a few weeks ago I broke 2nd gear while break boosting.... The trans has only seen the track with slicks once since my new setup, but has seen a Good bit of Street racing ....I'm currently makin 410whp and 300tq . Maybe it was just time for it to go considering it has 150k on it ...

It depens on alot! Enginemounts, axles, tires, wheel size, differentials, bushings, clutch, suspension etc.
If everything is stiff and solid and on gigantic slicks the trannys gears will take every hit and break. If the axles twist, the engine moves a bit, the clutch slips just a tad the tranny will hold up alot better.

The shocks that goes throug the drivetranin is not linear with the enginges tourqe output. It has alot of spikes. What will absorb those spikes? If the clutch is not too high rated the clutch will slip those shockloads away. If you get the stiffest clutch you can get your hands on the axles and tranny etc will take it insted.

A flow control valve does just that. Alows the clutch to slip the spikes away during shifts and saveing the drivetrain some.

So it depends alot on your setup and as mensiond how you drive.

I put 100+ passes on my k20 trans and 6 years of street rape.

does this count as shifting like you mean it?

I am picking up a ep3 trans with unknown miles for my K24a4 build for 300.00 and my goal is 600+ at the crank, hoping it holds crossing fingers, and launching and driving has a lot to do with and ep3 trans is a lot better than a B series trans hands down.

Hmmm, my stock CTR transmission handled 600whp for years. If anything, B-series transmissions can handle a lot of abuse and I've heard way more problems with k-series transmissions over b's.

As far as strength, no K series is better than or even as good as the B series.

A lot of the horror stories you hear are from owners with a stock K series clutch master which will destroy your gears if you try and shift it fast. The rest is just people who cant drive.
