Default h22a1 raw fuel smell poor idle

a few weeks ago i picked up a 93 prelude with a h22a1 the person i got it from said he put a stroker kit in it that im not 100 per. sure about the guys said this was there first honda build (you could tell) when i got the car home i started looking the car over everything was half *** done got everything like it should be vac.,tighten all the loss bolts, exc.... the car is running very poor has a aftermarket fuel rail with a adj. fuel pressure gauge (found that it runs best set at 60psi) when starting out bogs down really bad before it takes off once you get it going she runs great but has a bad gas smell tomorrow im going to pull it down and check the timing on it thinking it my be a tooth off but wanted to see if anyone might have any other ideas on what it could be thanks for any help you can give

Probably needs to be tuned, but from the sounds of it, you need to make sure everything is in good shape first.

^^^+1

Agreed, if it truly has a stroker kit in it, then it needs to be tuned by a pro. If it has the p13 ecu, then you can bet you are looking at some big $$$ to get a s300-chipped ecu and then more $$$ to have it tuned by the pro.

I am also suspecting the timing (same as you said). Off-timing will cause hesitation/bogging on one end of time...the other extreme will probably cause detonation.

I believe the stock fuel psi is closer to 35psi (somewhere around there). Pumping in too much fuel allows you to make up for bad timing somewhat, because there will be some fuel remaining inside when it is TIME for it to be needed (all theory..I am not an expert...I just play around with my timing alot..lol)

Since they, for some reason, thought they actually needed to upgrade the fuel rail, they may have upgraded the fuel injectors and fuel pump also. Upgrading each one of these alone will usually result in a different rate of fuel-spray even if the fuel pressure is set to 35psi (or so). Hence the need for a chipped ecu and proper tuning.

As for the smell, I would check for exhaust leaks...Most of the fuel smell should be pushed out the back of the exhaust.

GL with getting it running good LMK if you decide to put a few stock parts back on it. I am actually getting ready for a f22-stroked h22 and I am always looking for some good upgrades before I tune it :D

btw, what kind of stroker kit did they put in it, and does it already have a chipped ECU? I would love you forever if yours is tuned and you shared your basemap with the honda community.

the cheap stroker kit is to put an f22 crank/rods in it. No real way to confirm that other than to pull the whole bottom off and check em out.

I would probably start by verifying the timing on everything, and then check fuel pressure and proper fuel spray rate...upgraded injectors will screw up your fuel spray rate??

easy way to check for a stroker kit would be to drop a long extension down into the spark plug hole and measure how far it travels. mark it with a sharpie at tdc then at bdc and measure the distance between the marks.

when i say drop in i don't mean flop it down in there i mean put it in slowly as to not slam it down onto the piston.

that is a great idea never even crossed my mind will do that tomorrow and the timing is out but i also discovered that the front belt was just layin in there and the pulley on the front (closest to the front of the car by oil pump) isnt there at all

aright so i got everything worked out with the timing now the car runs great at idle and if you rev it up fast but if i just step on the pedal just alittle she bogs out and will stay like that untill you really rev it up almost like it is over loading on the fuel pressure anything under 40psi and it willnt run and i also measured the stroke it is stock no stroker kit anyone got any ideas
