Where are you located? If you're in Cali, things can get expensive since you pretty much have to buy an OEM Honda cat. If not in Cali, try discountcatalyticconverters.com I've used them a couple times with no problems.

i hope you know there are many things that causes a failed smog check...not just a catalytic converter
could be something as simple as 2 dollar spark plugs vs 200+ for a catalytic converter.

+1 don't throw parts at it... make sure you know that it is the cat before you replace it, I'd hate to see you shove out 200 quid on a cat to have it still fail emissions.

 

How was it determined that you needed a new catalyst?
Thanks to unscrupulous muffler shops making a quick buck, and aftermarket catalyst companies being cheap on the substrate coatings, you now can only purchase/use EO/CARB approved catalysts. The days of $90 bolt in catalysts are gone.

a week before the retest, i noticed the valve gasket was leaking oil and the spark plugs was drained.my HC only went up a bit so i was thinking that was the problem. i replaced the spark plugs and valve gasket, i was going to replace the spark plugs wires but bought the wrong size.i warmed up my car before going there and failed once again. i noticed i was only a few points off the HC(PPM).

i don't want to pay to do a diagnose, but if that's the only way to figure the problem out it's gonna cost a lot! what do you guys think the problem is?

 

The CO is on the high side, and the O2 seems a bit low. Combined with the high HC I'm guessing its running a tad rich. You will have high HCs if you have just improved the ignition system(installed new spark plugs) this tends to help burn off any excessive build up of carbon on the piston faces/combustion chamber.

If oil was seeping into the combustion chamber this can also cause excess HC. Same goes for if its been a while since there was an oil change.

I would do an oil change if its close, slap a new air filter on, check the PCV system, and even SeaFoam the engine. The SeaFoam will help quickly clean off the excessive varnish and carbon buildup. Put the recommended amount into the gas tank, oil, and mosquito fog the neighborhood.

BTW when you change spark plugs, its a good idea to also change the O2 sensor, consider it the 5th plug. Overtime it can become lazy in its response. If it becomes coated or insulated in soot it can also be slow to react. Not slow enough to cause a CEL but it can effect your mileage, power and emissions.

FWIW I actually broke a O2 sensor a few years back, I knew I busted it, but the CEL never came on. On removal it rattled like a bell. Don't always expect the O2 or ECU(CEL) to tell on itself.

Stick with Denso, Delco/Delphi, or NTK/NGK O2s. Other brands such as Bosch with their beer can appearance are lazy, slow to react and take forever to heat up and quickly cool down. Not good for correct O2 sensor operation.

My 94 F22B just failed CO(%) @ 25mph. On my report, the ASM Emission Test Results for CO are: MAX @ 15mph - 0.34, and @ 25mph - 0.33 .

My CO @ 15 mph is .33, and @ 25mph is .45

I'm curious why my MAX numbers are different than Garlick's (.49/.51)?

Change your O2 sensor.

 

Unless it is the same exact car in the same exact state of repair, you will never have the exact same readout. A same car tested will not have the same exact readout.
Post up all the gases on the readout, if in Calif, post up the 5 gas readout.

 

Since failing this test, I have changed the oil, plugs, and air filter. Don't want to retest until I cover all the bases, so your advice is most appreciated. Thanks Mike!
