I have a stock 2000 Civic Si. It has 156k miles on the original motor.
I am thinking about having the timing belt changed. The local delaer quoted me 900+ bucks for parts and labor.
Has anyone had this done before? What did you pay?

no way i lived in new york and now i live in washington state and in both stated a timing belt would run 300 400 at most the only time i had to pay 800 was on my nissan because it runs on a timing chain which is more complicated but no way should it cost more than 400 for a civic

When I worked for Honda I'm pretty sure we did them for a lot less than $900
You should be able to get this done in the $400 - $600 range. That said make sure whoever is doing the work uses a genuine Honda waterpump and either a Honda or Gates belt.

I got T-Belt, water pump, valve cover gasket, main seals and some other shenanigans done for near 700ish in my EM1 right as I got it.
(didn't know enough to do it by myself at the time)
Which I ended up making out on the deal, a couple of the valve cover stems broke in the process and big H tapped them out.
I was starting a job the week after that required a 60mi round trip drive, I didn't want to efff with it.
Belts are like 50 bucks
water pump is like 50 bucks
new accessory belts like 50 bucks
coolant/gaskets/etc say 40 bucks
say 4 hours of someones time at 40 an hr. is 160
your right around $400
at 156k it is really at the end of its life, Id change it asap. Buy the parts yourself *get OEM especially the water pump) and then pay 4 hours labor, or make friends and buy beer. Here in NY theres alot of guys that'll do it for you in your garage for 20-30/hr. It isnt a hard job...

Wow that's a lot never go to dealers for anything for your car unless that's the only place you can get it. Dealers always over charge, it's way cheaper to do it yourself and quit easy. You can get everything you need at your local auto parts store like Autozone or Napa. They also have manuals on all types of cars that tells you exactly how to do things with pictures. Hope this helps. Good luck with your car.

For point of reference - my dealership charged in the mid $500.00. It's ok to pay to have it done if you're not mechanically inclined, don't have the space/tools or are physically unable to perform the work. Some folks here are too quick to jump on the wagon about that. Turning your own wrenches is a part of being an enthusiast, but not required. Good luck.
Like he said, and just go OEM for everything. Its proven to last 100K miles. I was quoted as well around 800 but I am modified and like you do not have the time to do it right now. Just do it before the belt fails and you need a new motor. OUCH!
