Hi folks,

The Kelly Blue Book website does not give car values made before 1992. What do you guys recommend?

The NADA value seems way jacked up. While the Edmunds "market value" seems very low.

I'm kind of surprised that the "kelly blue book" values aren't available anywhere. Even if i got an outdated appraisal value i could adjust that number with additional years aged.


I did search on this forum section and found nothing. My apologies if this question is already answered somewhere in the FAQ. I didn't see it.

It means your car is so old. KBB doesn't cover that aged of a vehicle because it's not worth much of anything for KBB to even try to give a value.

If you look at an EXCELLENt 1992 Si, then you'll see that it's $2000.
So basically the 88~91 is going to cost less than that.

(I know that they have a search engine called "the wayback machine" that would have the old Kelly blue book info in it's cache. just a matter of how difficult would it be to find.)

 

Last time I checked, our cars were roughly $700 KBB. Of course good ones go for 2-3000

Yup. Seen a crx si with a sorts of options. Bone stock original owners 60k miles go for about 7500 on eBay

I wouldn't even bother with kbb. It's bogus anyway. Go with what you believe the vehicle is worth and negotiate with people from there.

 

Alot depends on the area you are in too. I live in a small Alabama town and find descent ones for 700. Went to Tampa (Tuner Market) and saw one in nice condition so i thought 2k ought to get it. Guy wanted 5800 bone stock and that was average price there

I want the value because i am car shopping. In the past i've always started with kelly blue book and adjusted up or down for rust, mechanical defects, needed repairs, low or high mileage, etc.

I'm basically looking for a stock civic/crx with manual transmission. Not looking to race. Some would say i'm merely looking for a "grocery getter" -- a cost efficient means of transportation. But a "grocery getter" has already made me very content for many years.

After i get a basic feel for what out there looks to be a good value i'll likely be asking more questions here.

With all due respect i am a good tax accountant. I am NOT good with cars. I am an occasional hack at best.

I simply do not have the confidence that i imagine most of honda-tech members would have.

UPDATE I've found edmunds.com also give "real market" value for pre 1992 cars.

Better than the NADA site. The NADA site jacks values way up. It gives the price that dealers typically ask -- NOT the price that dealers or private parties end up getting for a car.

Those values for the older Hondas you'll find aren't worth the paper (or webpage) they are written on. It will vary greatly with car, location, trimline, etc.

A Mint '91 Si that's all stock, no rust and under 100K miles is going to demand a premium vs. a 1991 Dx that has some rust and an automatic transmission. And when I say premium, I'm talking several thousand dollars, or more.

Heck, even a '91 Dx automatic with no rust and in good condition will sell for over its "book" value by a considerable amount.

Remember, this *is* an older Honda you're talking about. You will only get them cheap if they are rusted or the person is dumb and goes by book value.

 

Actually, the insurance company valued my 1991 CRX Si around $3k when they totaled it.

Think you are missing the point.
In general, cars older than what KBB shows are getting ready for the junk yard.
There are the rare finds that are gems for the fanatic or collector.

KBB can't put an honest price on these vehicles because it's not very clear at all what the car "should" be worth.

 

That sounds like a fair price. here in Los Angeles a sedan with blown head gaskets go for $300. B series swapped jdm fan Boi's try and get 4k and keep the ad up for years.

With all due respect i was NOT happy with that amount. Not a fair price, imo. This was roughly 4 years ago. The car was running very well. They were giving 500 which was less than a third of regular book value. They were giving below book value because my car had a "branded" title. A "branded" title means that the car was totaled before

(i already knew about it being in a wreck. Before i bought the car, a mechanic examined it. He advised me that it had been rebuilt properly and that it was still a good buy. This was in 1999 and time proved his assessment to be correct.)

I paid someone less than 100 bucks to bang out the dents and make the hood functional. That was good enough for me -- much better than giving up my car for a measily 500.

i was looking for the same.. the reason i need to know is so i can calculate what the commonwealth of MA is gonna charge me to register it.. what they do is go by the blue book value and charge you the tax of the value.. when i lived in NJ we used to be charged the tax for whatever the title said we paid for it.. so some states do the blue book value so cheats cant eff the system.. such a pain in the tukkus.. i mean i paid 500 for mine, but according to MA im a lire :/

 

A year ago when I bought by car they still had KBB values for our cars. I'm suprised that they took them off. When it was there for an 1990 SI in good condition it was around $1300.

In my area I have seen/sold many EF's for anywhere from 1200 to 4000, and purchased from 800 to 2500. It really is dependent on condition, area and who you are buying from. The last EF that I sold was a 1990 Civic Wagon with 160k on the clock, sold for $1200.

Edmunds says my car is worth $426 hahaha awesome, if I were to trade it in I would owe the dealer 16$ hahahaha that gave me a tickle
