i have an 89 dx hatch z6 swap p28 ecu obd1 jumper harness its throwing code 17 vss as far as i know but my tranny dont have one on it its a spedo cable. question 1: would code 17 stop vtec from kicking in? question 2: how do i fix it?

 

vss is vehicle speed sensor and it is the speedo cable but obd-1 cars use wirnig not a cable so if you still have the cable tranny and stock guage cluster the speedo cable is the vss one side into tranny one side into back of cluster. but if you have a complete z6 with hydro tranny it has a electronic vss so there would be no plug for it on your engine harness so it wouldnt be plugged up and would throw a code. in which case you can get a plug and wire it up yourself to your cluster and to ecu. and vtec will not engage with speedo not workin i ran into that in my lsvtec crx when i was doin ek cluster, had to take cable vss out of cable ls tranny and put electronic vss in and plug for it and wire it myself.

 

i have the old tranz with the cable to the cluster. is there a way i can run it this way and get vtec working??

 

would i have to take the speedo cable out and put the vss in my current tranz (dont look like it would work like that) and get dif cluster and wire everything up? or is there a way i can bypass the vss and wire my cluster to the ecu. ive never felt vtec or i couldnt tell and its something i wish to feel soon

 

i have the same setup in my hatch and i believe the speed pulser wire is tied in to the vss in order to engage vtec

 

i dont have a vss as far as i know its just spedo cable tranny to cluster no other speed sensor all but my gas gadge work just no vtec and im throwing code 17 i have a jumper running to my vtec from the ecu but i didnt do the jumper it was in the car when i bought it so idk how its saposed to be hooked up on the ecu side. id like to know how to get vtec working without a vss, like maybe somekind of rpm switch or trick the ecu to think it has one

 

the speed pulser exists in your stock cluster its a reference signal off of the tach i believe that relays info to the ecu

 

so how do i hook it up so vtec kicks in? and could u post pics so im not guessing or anything. i appreciate the help thx

 

look bro your vss just stays hooked up like is always has been with the cable from tranny to the back of your cluster no need to run the wire to your ecu there is a wire there for that from the factory. no need to swap cluster or vss. it should work fine even obd-1 with just the cable u still have stock tranny and cluster. push the cable all the way into your tranny and check for the lil clip. speedo should be workin if still doesnt try a new cable vss. u can swap to a electronic vss and newer cluster if it still doesnt work

 

well i dont have the clip but the spedo does work if its saposed to work the way it is now maybe its just a loose wire or dirty vtec solonoid ill replace the solonoid i have a spare see how tht goes. or its wired wrong the guy i got the car from rewired the whole car and im still trying to fix his f'd up wiring two years later got everything working becides vtec, gas gadge (probibly needs new float) heat gadge (no wires or plugs on the harness to hook up). thx 4 the help guys anyone else got any ideas wht it could b. ill post if i find a solution
