99 Civic Ex (d16y8) Starting up a bit slow. Any of this sound familiar to anyone?
Hello H-T Community,
I've got a question. It's nothing major, I don't think. But i'm curious to know why this happens.
Some morning I start up my car "99 Civic EX (D16Y8) 5SPD" it turns on but the rpm goes up really slow.
For instance, you start your car and the RPM gauge shoots up between 1.5k-2k RPMs because the car has to warm up to operating temperatures. Eventually your car idles normally below 1k RPM when the car is warmed up.
Once my car is started, there's a small delay once the car fires up from the point where the RPM is supposed to quickly shoot up to 2k RPM on a cold start. So that "Quickly" shooting up to 2K RPM doesn't always happen. It happens every now and then and I'm wondering if this is a common issue of some sort.
Other symptoms...the motor seems to be vibrating a bit more than normal. This has been happening for about a week. The last thing I had done to the motor aside from an oil change was have my mechanic Replace an alternator bolt that broke off.
Thanks in advance to you guys. You guys have this knowledge that I wish to possess.

Don't see any where that you said you did a complete tune up or how long ago you did it.
Touche. I compliment you on your excellent vision. LOL.
My question stemmed from being unsure if this problem had anything to do with the lack of recent maintenance such Spark Plugs, Distributor, Timing Belt or if it may have been something as simple as a bad ground, touching wires, etc.
I'm scheduled for a tune up in a week. If there's any available information before my appointment, I'd definitely love to give your suggestions a look.

I would say that the tuneup needs to be done regardless. If you can do it yourself then buy the parts and save yourself about $400 in labor.
Thanks for the input.
I was driving tonight and "ON" came my CEL.
I checked and it's running a Code 9. Car runs fine, any idea what this could be. I'm searching as we speak.

9 is the Cylinder sensor inside your distributor. First, reset your ECU. If the code doesn't come back, you should be fine. If it does, replace the cap and rotor. If that doesn't fix it, look into a new alternator.
Check condition of:
-battery
-alternator
-starter
-oil level/condition/weight (should be using 5w30)
-ground connections
Assuming your car hasn't been tuned up in a long time you will need to do the following:
-Plugs/wires/cap/rotor/pcv valve
-Adjust the valves
-Replace fuel and air filter
If you want to do a 100% complete tune up, I'd go ahead and have the manual trans fluid changed, along with the coolant, p/s fluid, and brake/clutch fluid.
If you stay on top of these things as time/mileage comes about you won't have these types of issues, or they will be much easier to find. Have the CEL checked, and correct that issue first.
