Well, I just replaced an exhaust camshaft on a '04 Accord, 2.4L and now I have P0341 showing up. It idles fine but won't get above 5000 rpm. I triple checked the timing before it went together and have torn it apart again and checked it once more, it is all good. I have read that it can come from stretched timing chains, tensioner, and the VTC actuator. I am leaning towards possibly the VTC actuator. Is there any way to check this? It ran fine before it was torn apart. I checked the tensioner again and the chain is tight and is out the same as it was before. Any advise is very welcome.

 

Have you actually checked the cam sensor and connections?

highly unlikely unless you really did a number to the motor prior to the initial tear down.

 

I checked the connections and the sensors. Is there a resistance to check on the sensors?

 

Agreed, they would have given me a CEL prior to disassembly. It only has 60,000 miles.

Op, here's what i would do. p0341 will only be caused by one of the following on this vehicle, incorrect timing, stretched chain, clogged or stuck open/closed vtc control solenoid, damaged camshaft lock pin, faulty vtc actuator or damaged cmp pulse plate. Since there weren't any issues before replacing the exhaust cam, i would look towards a vtc actuator or pulse plate issue, assuming the timing is correct.

Inspect the pulse plate on the exhaust cam for any damage (it's on the opposite end from the cam gear).

Did you remove the actuator from the intake camshaft? If so, was the actuator in the unlocked position when reinstalled? You may have damaged the camshaft pin if you used a impact gun to tighten the actuator.

If the lower cover is off then measure the tensioner rod length to check for a stretched chain. You want to measure between the tensioner body and bottom of the flat surface section on the tensioner rod. If the length is over 13.5mm then the chain and tensioner need replacement.

Next check the vtc oil control solenoid for any debris that may have clogged the screen. It's possible that the solenoid is stuck open or closed but likely would have been an issue prior to repair.
