Default Tool sets?

I currently have a 300 piece craftsman tool set that I keep with me in the trunk, however literally 90% of the tools are worthless to me, and civic trunks aren't the largest to begin with. I have a nice set I keep in a tool box, but that isn't feasible to travel with.

Does anyone have a metric tool set that they keep in the trunk they could reco?

I am looking for something with 10,11,13 and 17mm obviously, preferably with deep sockets, never know what could happen on the road. I need a carry case as well...or Id just keep a little box with the most common sizes for our cars.

Thanks-

You can keep a small set of sockets like you listed, some electrical tape, fuses etc. But anything that happens that is beyond simple tools you will need a tow truck for anyway. Invest in AAA.

My buddy and I were just talking about craftsman..... Im starting to think maybe I should start investing in say husky or kobalt. I mean the way things are going for sears, Id be surprised if I have any place to take my craftsman tools to swap em in 2-3 years. At least home depot and lowes have a chance of survival.

Yea, I hear what your saying. I didnt point out in my original post but I have a little place outside the city that I go to like 1x a month, I dont have a tool set there, so I keep all the essentials in my car so when I go, Im prepared for most things that spring up on you. I didnt necessarily mean just breaking down in the middle of the highway.

I mean simple stuff I can do there in the driveway of my weekender, as long as I got the tools. I mean brakes, radiator, belts, alternator, oil etc. I dont bring enough tools to do say a timing belt, but Id say 75% of that stuff I could do with my tool box. I could probably even take it as far as a head gasket...to the point of checking for warp etc. but I could def pull the head off, tho.

Hondas are great since it only has 4 bolt sizes....but then you need deep sockets/shallow/open ended/yada yada yada.

Ah, yea your right. I think they did just change the return policy to you needing the recipt when you do it.

I remember 4-5 years ago, when I broke my dads 20 year old rachet he said take it to sears. I did, one of the guys grabbed it, and said no problem, I'll get a new one. I was out the door in less then 15 minutes.

I like husky tools, they seem pretty good for the money. Snap on is WAY overpriced.

I love me some snap on.....however I got a catalog and talked to a rep. When he told me it was over 3 bills just for a set of 8mm-17mm sockets, I had to stop him.

I mean, maybe If I worked on cars for a living I could justify off buying 10k for 150 sockets...however I can get the same out of my occasional use craftsman and I paid like $300 for.

Sears has fallen along way. I only got craftsman because it was the...if it breaks, bring it in and you can have another one-no questions asked. Ever since they absorbed kmart *which was a great idea* has it gotten so bad. I used to take sockets in that I'd pop with my impact---no one said a word, just go in the cabinet and get me a new one.

Times have changed with that though....

I don't know guys. I'm looking on Ebay right now and you could score a socket set on the relatively cheap.

Not too bad, but still expensive for a used set.

I am half way tempted to pick one up today. Before the price goes up.

theres a used tool store near me, that has some great deals on snap on----like 5 dollar wrenches, and sockets for a buck...

however, its all loose and its all just whatever they got---so either you need to be patient, or have 10 hours to sit and dig through milk crates full of tools.

I got a nice ~140 piece tool kit for Christmas from Costco. Let me see if I can find it for you.
EDIT: Checked Costco's website and didn't see it on there. But it's a pretty nice kit! You could take apart most of your car with it

Check my signature for a list of essential tools I bring to the wreckers if I need to remove parts from Hondas. What you want in a trunk tool kit will mirror that pretty closely, give or take a few items.

Its not a bad thing to have just incase, you have no idea what someone put on the car before you got it.

my buddy's 95 had quite a few SAE bolts on it.

Rather than buying a tool "set", what's wrong with putting together your own set of tools? Sure, you can buy that eleventy-bajillion piece set, but at the end of the day, you'll use maybe 10 of those sockets, two of the ratchets, a couple of the wrenches, and a hex key or two.

All you need to do regular maintenance work is a jack, jack stands, 10-18mm socket and wrench set, a 3/8" ratchet, a torque wrench, 32mm socket with 1/2" breaker bar, and a hex key set. A good micrometer, O2 sensor socket, and auto stethoscope will also go a long way. You can get a solid, metal middle box from Craftsman for <$100 that will fit in the trunk of your car and carry all of the above, other than the jack and stands. That's all I have in my box, and I've yet to run into something I didn't have the tools to do.
